skylee Posted December 14, 2004 at 11:01 PM Report Posted December 14, 2004 at 11:01 PM 陔蔭 These two characters look like a product of a coding problem. Xinjiang used to be called 西域 Xiyu. Quote
bluepoppy Posted December 17, 2004 at 10:23 PM Report Posted December 17, 2004 at 10:23 PM Yes... I think Skylee is right, but I just wanted to warn you not to go around asking about other names for Xinjiang because that very question could be interpreted as a 'political statement' in itself. The question of the name of Xinjiang might be raised in a debate about its status as a Province of China... (not by me though). Someone might think I am being over-cautious but honestly I once accidentally offended a Chinese friend asking the very same question! Quote
Jose Posted December 18, 2004 at 12:41 AM Report Posted December 18, 2004 at 12:41 AM skylee is right. The two characters 新疆 have the numeric values 0xd0c2 and 0xbdae respectively under the GB coding system used for simplified Chinese. But these same values correspond to the characters 陔蔭 in the Big5 system used for traditional Chinese. Quote
Guest Roderic Posted December 18, 2004 at 03:56 PM Report Posted December 18, 2004 at 03:56 PM 西域 is an ancient name vaguely refered to Xinjiang. Another name is 東突厥 or 東突厥斯坦, which usually refers to an independent movement of Xinjiang. _______________ "Power does not corrupt man; fools, however, if they get into a position of power, corrupt power" Echoing http://chinese-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2894&start=20 Quote
