One trick I've used for fake bills is to remember the last few digits of the serial number on the bill when I hand it over. Many times, normally dark places and out of your view, they will switch it with a fake bill and hand it back saying it's no good. This hasn't happened to me yet, but I would call them out if they gave me back a bill with a different serial number.
