Hi Hi, new user here,

In about 2 weeks a friend and I are planning to fly to ChongQing and pick up my wife's car for her. She wants us to take it to Beijing, where we are moving to in August.

I have been living in Zhuhai for many years and already have a China driving license. My friend however has been living across the border in Macao all these years and only has a Macao driving license. Since, he would like to help with the driving, and you cannot drive on a Macao license in China, he needs to get a provisional (temporary) driving license.

I have read that these are available at the airport in both Beijing and Shanghai. Does anyone know if they are available in ChongQing?

Also, in order to apply for the temporary license, one thing you need is Temporary residence registration form. Considering that you usually get this at the hotel, and the kiosk for doing the license is at the airport (so you have not actually gotten to your hotel yet) how can I get the form? Do they have them at the airport now?

Thanks,

Bob

I don't live in Chongqing but from what I heard about, in order to convert your overseas driver's licence to a Chinese one, you need to apply for a temporary licence at the local DMV, then go through a medical check up, and submit all your application forms. Once the application has been processed, you can then sit for the written test. If you pass the test, a temporary license will be issued. Doesn't sound like something you can complete just in the airport.

No no, that is what you do for a PERMANENT Driving License. I know because I already have one and have gone through all that.

Now however they have a PROVISIONAL DRIVING LICENSE which is temporary and only valid for 90 days. I know it is available in Beijing and Shanghai already, because China is finally starting to wake up and realize that foreign tourists are coming and are going to want to rent cars. So, they made this available at the airports. See Wiki. Or see the Hertz Rental car website for China

Here is the link http://www.hertzchina.com/productsandservices/license-application

What I need to know is if there is anyway to do this in ChongQing? Otherwise my friend will need to make a stop over. In Shanghai or Beijing on the way.

What I said was what I heard of how to get a temporary driver's licence in China which is valid up to 3 months. You have to sit for classes and go through road test if you wish to apply for a permanent Chinese driver's licence. I don't know how Hertz carries out its procedures in Beijing and Shanghai, but my aunt who holds a Hong Kong licence was not exempted from any of the steps which I mentioned in my first post when she applied for her temporary Chinese licence in Chengdu. I did a brief search on Google, and it seemed to me that Chongqing would be, most likely, the same case as Chengdu.

对不起, Sorry, I must have read your post too quickly the first time.

Well, I guess as more and more Chinese travel abroad now, including government officials, someone must have noticed how inconvenient all that was here compared with other countries. Which is a good thing, so now they are doing something to make it easier.

If it is only in Beijing and Shanghai now, that is ok. Eventually it will probably be that way in the rest of the country, or at least in the bigger cities.

Thanks anyway for the information. Looks like my friend will have to do a stop over in Shanghai on the way to ChongQing if he wants to help with the driving.

Here is the way in those places: (I left off option 2 which is for long term licenses)

Anyone got any information on getting a driving licence down in Shenzhen or Guangzhou?

I've heard mixed reports about people being able to get them easily by applying to a specific office in Guangzhou with their Hong Kong driving licence and Hong Kong ID, as well as people saying that you can't do this, you need a full medical and test.

The guards at the office in Guangzhou said that we should come back as this was the right place for HK ID holders to apply (we went on a Saturday), but they gave no information as to the requirements.

I've been told there is also another office in the centre of town where foreigners (it was word of mouth in the French community there) had been given driving licences based on their foreign licences. No information on requirements, how long these last etc.

Any help is much appreciated.
