Quest Posted December 18, 2004 at 11:02 PM Report Posted December 18, 2004 at 11:02 PM In the West, thousands separators are used to group numbers by 3 digits. For example: 1,000,000,000,000 or 1.000.000.000.000 since we have thousand, million, billion, trillion In Chinese, however, large numbers are counted by groups of ten thousands 万,亿,兆 which correspond to ten thousand, one hundred million, trillion. Logically speaking, separators should be placed at these units when writing out arabic numbers in Chinese. For example: 1,0000,0000,0000 or 1.0000.0000.0000 But, most Chinese still use thousands separators in conformance with the international standard, which doesn't make a lot of sense in the Chinese counting system. Do you think Chinese (arabic) numbers should be written according to the international standard or do you think they should be written in the 4-digit grouping system? Quote

liuzhou Posted December 19, 2004 at 03:37 AM Report Posted December 19, 2004 at 03:37 AM But, most Chinese still use thousands separators In my experience most Chinese tend to write larger numbers without using any separators at all! In a way it helps. I just mentally split it into groups of threes, while they split into fours and we come up with the same answer! Sometimes Quote
