dragon cultural advice please:)

Hello to all Chinese people who read this forum!

I am new here and was wondering if you could give me some advice. I have been doing some research on the dragon symbol and how it is perceived across the world.

For instance so far I have discovered that the term 'dragon' in Western culture has been in use since the 13th century - a "huge serpent" or "giant seafish", it is derived from the ancient Greek derkesthai "to see clearly". Also in the West the dragon is usually cast as malevolent, an enemy of man, ultimately slain by a hero. In contrast for the East and China in particular a dragon is benevolent; a bringer of good fortune and a sign of great power and wisdom.

Both East and West share the dragon’s association as a guardian of treasure in particular the Chinese dragon commonly depicted with clutching a pearl in one of its talons or its mouth.

That is how much I have learnt so far, mostly form the internet but that is no substitute for people's opinions which is why I'm here now.

And just to be honest the reason I am interested in the dragon symbol is that I'm part of a team that has been given the task of selling the domain name, dragon.com. I am not here to try and sell it to forum members but to get advice on whether it is worthwhile approaching Chinese companies or individuals with the sale.

In other words do you think anybody in China be interested or use an English word website like dragon.com?

What do you think? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Andrew, UK
