patricia25 Posted August 7, 2011 at 11:43 AM Report Share Posted August 7, 2011 at 11:43 AM I am obviously a beginner. How does one say Wednesday night? On Wednesday night, it rained a lot at night. Wan3shang de xing1qi1 san1, hen3 xia4yu3. or Xing1qi1 san1 de wan3shang, hen3 xia4yu3. I can't seem to find a tutorial online. Thank you in advance for your help! skylee Posted August 7, 2011 at 02:53 PM Report Share Posted August 7, 2011 at 02:53 PM Xing1qi1 san1 de wan3shang, hen3 xia4yu3. The first part is ok. For "it rained a lot at night." (do you need to mention "at night" again?), consider 下了很大的雨 (xia4 le hen3da4 de yu3). I am not good at writing in pinyin so please forgive me for any mistakes here. jbradfor Posted August 7, 2011 at 11:37 PM Report Share Posted August 7, 2011 at 11:37 PM (edited) Xing1qi1 san1 de wan3shang I don't recall ever hearing a 的 between time units. Am I wrong about this and it's common, or is it uncommon but OK, or just wrong? hen3 xia4yu3 This I believe is wrong. While hen3 (很) is typically translated as "very", it functions some-what kind-of like a verb in Chinese. So you can't use hen3 to modify a verb (here, xia4 下). As skylee pointed out, you need to change the word order so it modifies an adjective (here, da4 (大)). EDIT: stupid explanation above. Try again: just as in English, hen3 (很) can not modify a verb. Here, xia4(下) is a verb. As skylee pointed out, you need to change the word order so it modifies an adjective (here, da4 (大)).
