skylee Posted December 20, 2004 at 06:21 AM Report Posted December 20, 2004 at 06:21 AM These reports are a bit old (but hey Hong Kong and the Great Wall are on both lists). National Geographics' 50 places of a lifetime -> English -> http://www.nationalgeographic.com/traveler/intro.html Chinese -> http://www.vita2000.com/Article/Article-2-3.htm BBC's 50 places to see before you die -> English -> http://www.nmt.edu/~armiller/50places.htm Chinese -> http://bjimg.focus.cn/upload/photos/1113/IFs55wHD.jpg I have only been to 16 of the places on National Geographic's list (will be going to two more in the coming two months) and 13 of BBC's list (adding four more in the coming two months). How about you? Quote
bhchao Posted December 20, 2004 at 07:22 AM Report Posted December 20, 2004 at 07:22 AM I would like to visit the South Island, Iceland, the Norwegian fjords, the Amalfi Coast, Corfu, Lesbos, Yunnan, Tibet, and the Galapagos Islands. Never been to Hawaii and never will. Too common a destination. I also want to cruise the entire length of the Yangtze from east to west, and be the first to enter Qin Shi Huang's tomb as part of the archaeological team once the green light is given (only problem is getting around the booby traps and dodging the arrows) Quote

Bob Dylan Thomas Posted December 20, 2004 at 02:49 PM Report Posted December 20, 2004 at 02:49 PM Bangkok???? i suppose it was voted for by the dubious constituency of viewers of a BBC holiday program, but even so... I also suspect the inclusion of London by NG is an error. EDinburgh, maybe, but London? i've been to 8 of NG's list and 6 of the BBC's. But who needs these so-called experts... it's about time we here on CLaCF decided the 50 best places in the world. Each poster gets 10 nominations, whaddya say? Obviously it will be just a little biased towards the Far East, but there's nothing wrong with that. Quote
bhchao Posted December 20, 2004 at 05:54 PM Report Posted December 20, 2004 at 05:54 PM Skylee, have you been to 漓江? That is one of my future destinations. Other potential destinations are Napier, North Island; Ithaca, Tangiers and Marrakech, and the English countryside. Quote
confucius Posted December 20, 2004 at 08:10 PM Report Posted December 20, 2004 at 08:10 PM I can easily name 50 places in China, if National Geographic or the BBC will pay me to visit and write about each one. Quote

geraldc Posted December 20, 2004 at 11:36 PM Report Posted December 20, 2004 at 11:36 PM I wouldn't put too much faith in BBC top 50 lists, they're voted on by idiots. They've just done a list of the Top 50 foods you have to try before you die, and there's not an endangered species on the list... The top 50 1. Fresh fish 2. Lobster 3. Steak 4. Thai food 5. Chinese food 6. Ice cream 7. Pizza 8. Crab 9. Curry 10. Prawns 11. Moreton Bay Bugs 12. Clam chowder 13. Barbecues 14. Pancakes 15. Pasta 16. Mussels 17. Cheesecake 18. Lamb 19. Cream tea 20. Alligator 21. Oysters 22. Kangaroo 23. Chocolate 24. Sandwiches 25. Greek food 26. Burgers 27. Mexican food 28. Squid 29. American diner breakfast 30. Salmon 31. Venison 32. Guinea pig 33. Shark 34. Sushi 35. Paella 36. Barramundi 37. Reindeer 38. Kebab 39. Scallops 40. Australian meat pie 41. Mango 42. Durian fruit 43. Octopus 44. Ribs 45. Roast beef 46. Tapas 47. Jerk chicken/pork 48. MarkH Posted December 22, 2004 at 07:08 PM Report Posted December 22, 2004 at 07:08 PM bhchao: Don't sell Hawaii short. I've travelled a lot, including to several of the places in your specific "other places" you'd like to visit list (actually, I was born in one of them!), and I can tell you Hawaii is a wondeful place. There is so much more to it than the tourist traps of Waikiki. Kauai, for example, has stunningly beautiful scenery and great hiking and horseriding. I also generally avoid tourist spots, but went to Hawaii for a wedding and found it was so amazing I definitely would like to go back. There is also a vibrant indigenous culture in the interior of the islands -- it's not all cocktails, grass skirts and pigs cooked in the ground, honest! 漓江 has also been on my list for a while, by the way. skylee Posted May 22, 2005 at 01:11 AM Author Report Posted May 22, 2005 at 01:11 AM 1. France; 2. Spain; 3. US; 4. China; 5. Italy; 6. UK; 7. HK(China); 8. Mexico; 9. Germany; 10. Austria Take a look -> Asian destinations on the rise in world tourism ranking 港首列全球十大旅遊區 Quote
Lorenzo Posted May 23, 2005 at 12:08 PM Report Posted May 23, 2005 at 12:08 PM I detect a cultural bias between the BBC and National Geographic list. Yes, London is a very cool destination for us Yanks. I love the city. Yet it seems odd to me that Florida and Disney are considered places one must see before they die. It's all about perspective, I suppose. Quote
bhchao Posted May 24, 2005 at 09:06 AM Report Posted May 24, 2005 at 09:06 AM Would like to visit Yeongdeok, Yongchu, Odongdo Island, and Jeju Island in Korea, as well as Yamagata prefecture in Japan. Quote

skylee Posted May 25, 2005 at 04:18 AM Author Report Posted May 25, 2005 at 04:18 AM A lot of Korean television series were filmed at Jeju Island, including Dae Jang Geum. yeah. when I tell people that I have been to Jeju before, they usually joke "oh were you in exile as a 官婢?". And my reply is "no, I was there as a 千戸大人". Quote
BeijingSlacker Posted May 28, 2005 at 10:00 AM Report Posted May 28, 2005 at 10:00 AM I didn't see Beijing on any lists. hmmm, if I was a Westerner (whatever this term means) and I had been to say NY, London, and Paris, I would probably place Beijing before a couple of cities on the list. Of course, it depends on if one is interested in Chinese cultural and historial stuff. Quote

I think Tasmania should be on the list for sure. Although maybe the less people that know about it the better ;) Quote
