These reports are a bit old (but hey Hong Kong and the Great Wall are on both lists).

National Geographics' 50 places of a lifetime ->

English -> http://www.nationalgeographic.com/traveler/intro.html

Chinese -> http://www.vita2000.com/Article/Article-2-3.htm

BBC's 50 places to see before you die ->

English -> http://www.nmt.edu/~armiller/50places.htm

Chinese -> http://bjimg.focus.cn/upload/photos/1113/IFs55wHD.jpg

I have only been to 16 of the places on National Geographic's list (will be going to two more in the coming two months) and 13 of BBC's list (adding four more in the coming two months).

How about you?

I would like to visit the South Island, Iceland, the Norwegian fjords, the Amalfi Coast, Corfu, Lesbos, Yunnan, Tibet, and the Galapagos Islands.

Never been to Hawaii and never will. Too common a destination.

I also want to cruise the entire length of the Yangtze from east to west, and be the first to enter Qin Shi Huang's tomb as part of the archaeological team once the green light is given (only problem is getting around the booby traps and dodging the arrows) 8)

Bangkok???? i suppose it was voted for by the dubious constituency of viewers of a BBC holiday program, but even so... I also suspect the inclusion of London by NG is an error. EDinburgh, maybe, but London?

i've been to 8 of NG's list and 6 of the BBC's. But who needs these so-called experts... it's about time we here on CLaCF decided the 50 best places in the world. Each poster gets 10 nominations, whaddya say? Obviously it will be just a little biased towards the Far East, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Skylee, have you been to 漓江? That is one of my future destinations.

Other potential destinations are Napier, North Island; Ithaca, Tangiers and Marrakech, and the English countryside.

I can easily name 50 places in China, if National Geographic or the BBC will pay me to visit and write about each one.

I wouldn't put too much faith in BBC top 50 lists, they're voted on by idiots.

They've just done a list of the Top 50 foods you have to try before you die, and there's not an endangered species on the list... :mrgreen:

The top 50

1. Fresh fish 2. Lobster 3. Steak 4. Thai food 5. Chinese food 6. Ice cream 7. Pizza 8. Crab 9. Curry 10. Prawns 11. Moreton Bay Bugs 12. Clam chowder 13. Barbecues 14. Pancakes 15. Pasta 16. Don't sell Hawaii short. I've travelled a lot, including to several of the places in your specific "other places" you'd like to visit list (actually, I was born in one of them!), and I can tell you Hawaii is a wondeful place. There is so much more to it than the tourist traps of Waikiki. Kauai, for example, has stunningly beautiful scenery and great hiking and horseriding. I also generally avoid tourist spots, but went to Hawaii for a wedding and found it was so amazing I definitely would like to go back. There is also a vibrant indigenous culture in the interior of the islands -- it's not all cocktails, grass skirts and pigs cooked in the ground, honest!

漓江 has also been on my list for a while, by the way.

I detect a cultural bias between the BBC and National Geographic list. Yes, London is a very cool destination for us Yanks. I love the city. Yet it seems odd to me that Florida and Disney are considered places one must see before they die. It's all about perspective, I suppose.

Would like to visit Yeongdeok, Yongchu, Odongdo Island, and Jeju Island in Korea, as well as Yamagata prefecture in Japan.

A lot of Korean television series were filmed at Jeju Island, including Dae Jang Geum.

yeah. when I tell people that I have been to Jeju before, they usually joke "oh were you in exile as a 官婢?". And my reply is "no, I was there as a 千戸大人". :mrgreen:

I didn't see Beijing on any lists. hmmm, if I was a Westerner (whatever this term means) and I had been to say NY, London, and Paris, I would probably place Beijing before a couple of cities on the list. Of course, it depends on if one is interested in Chinese cultural and historial stuff.

Agree. Although of course you could argue forever and a day about what should and shouldn't be included.

I think Tasmania should be on the list for sure. Although maybe the less people that know about it the better ;)
