Meng Lelan Posted August 16, 2011 at 12:44 AM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 12:44 AM But I thought roddy's quest for a new logo is a serious matter...he can't be joking. Quote
roddy Posted August 16, 2011 at 07:29 AM Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 07:29 AM Imron, you're right about the proportions / alignment. Can try and fix that. Kenny, I'm looking for an image to use as a logo rather than a Chinese name. Doesn't have to be a character, could be anything. This was just something I'd thought about before so I used it first - I'm more than open to other ideas. I can see this being a bit odd-looking, but I figure it might attract attention from new folk, and regular members will get used to it soon enough. Anonymoose, any other ideas? Quote
Hofmann Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:02 AM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:02 AM IMO just a name written well is pretty attractive, e.g. this. And stuff like 讠中 totally reeks of 俗. Or BS. Or both. It's a major turn-off. How about a brush, if you must use a symbol? Quote
roddy Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:08 AM Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:08 AM A brush is calligraphy and painting, which is a mere fraction of what we discuss on here. It'd be better than a panda or a Great Wall though. Should also have said - I need some kind of compact squarish image to use as a favicon (the little square button you see next to the url in your address bar and bookmarks. Quote
anonymoose Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:20 AM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:20 AM Anonymoose, any other ideas? How about just 中 on its own? Something like the old CNAC-Zhejiang Airlines logo (shown on this Wikipedia page). Quote
Guest realmayo Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:37 AM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:37 AM Please nothing self-consciously calligraphic -- I'd prefer a panda! Or ... a 中 with a C in the left hand part of the central box and an F in the right? Or better still, could you not work a C and an F into this logo? Quote
renzhe Posted August 16, 2011 at 11:03 AM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 11:03 AM The boy with the suitcase must stay!!! 1 Quote
creamyhorror Posted August 16, 2011 at 02:27 PM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 02:27 PM Horrible idea with horrible execution: 3 Quote
Hofmann Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:59 PM Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 09:59 PM I was thinking a brush being more like a symbol for discussion, but whatever. How about a few keys on a keyboard but instead of the keys being labelled "qwerty..." they can be labelled "天地玄黃宇宙洪荒..."? And yes, I'd hate something self-consciously calligraphic too, but nobody will ever understand what I'm talking about in this field. 1 Quote
roddy Posted August 16, 2011 at 10:14 PM Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 at 10:14 PM I kind of like the idea of a 中 with a speech bubble for the 口. Might see if I can mock something up tomorrow. Still prefer my idea I think, but that's par for the course . . . Quote
Ole Posted August 17, 2011 at 06:49 AM Report Posted August 17, 2011 at 06:49 AM If you like the idea with 中, why not 中me similar to this Chinese Google+ button Quote
roddy Posted August 18, 2011 at 11:28 AM Author Report Posted August 18, 2011 at 11:28 AM No laughing! Quote
renzhe Posted August 18, 2011 at 12:47 PM Report Posted August 18, 2011 at 12:47 PM Not obvious enough, if I didn't know it was meant to be a speech bubble, I'd assume that it was a glitch or poor writing. 2 Quote
Glenn Posted August 18, 2011 at 01:56 PM Report Posted August 18, 2011 at 01:56 PM I agree with renzhe. In fact, that's pretty much exactly what I thought when I saw it. I didn't eve know it was supposed to be a speech bubble until I read his comment. Quote
roddy Posted August 18, 2011 at 01:58 PM Author Report Posted August 18, 2011 at 01:58 PM Man, it took me ages to get it looking even that good  Quote
murrayjames Posted August 21, 2011 at 08:57 PM Report Posted August 21, 2011 at 08:57 PM First off, I love this site and wouldn't want to do without it. Really. And the redesign is ok, if a tad too Lenovo-ish. The new logo, though, is hideous. A Photoshop lighting effect from Freshman year, coupled with the most nondescript font imaginable. Save Times New Roman, maybe. When there are beautiful, pleasing-to-the-eye sans-serif fonts available. This is me lodging a complaint. We Chinese learners aren't the most artistically inclined of language-learning peoples, but come on. Quote
roddy Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:02 PM Author Report Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:02 PM Merging with a topic where you will find that you're the first to complain about the font. Probably not the last now you've put the idea into people's heads. Quote
murrayjames Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:13 PM Report Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:13 PM Should have seen the topic, sorry. I hope I'm not the last to complain about the font. Quote
roddy Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:21 PM Author Report Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:21 PM I basically take the defaults that come with the forum package and adjust from there. At the risk of stating the absolutely obvious, I am not a web-designer. Apologies if the result is displeasing. Quote
yonglin Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:21 PM Report Posted August 21, 2011 at 09:21 PM I think if you're going to have something in Chinese, it should mean something in Chinese, e.g., a Chinese translation of "Chinese-forums". I think it's a little tacky to use Chinese characters as "pictures" (even though... uhm... they are). If you want speech bubbles, go ahead and put speech bubbles, but don't incorporate them into Chinese characters --- I think you'd have to be *very* good to avoid it looking tacky. The font is boring, but I think that most importantly it needs to be a little bolder (I'm not saying the arial should be bolded, but that you need to use a font that is a little bolder itself). Also, I'm not quite sure what is the technical term for it, but the edges of the logo text look somewhat off (too pixelated). Quote
