It seems that this is the first time a dialect is being officially given so much leeway in Mainland. Quote

They used to be broadcast in Cantonese. I guess some time in the early 90s someone thought that was wrong or something. Actually I don't even know, I've been watching HK shows and programs since 1989 tiananmen. No one would watch mainland shows back then, most of them were garbage, and CCTV had only 1 channel broadcasting news all day. They told you things like some remote area in china produced more pigs... Quote
