Living in Guizhou a waste of time for my mandarin?

Recommended Posts

Just got offered a job in Guizhou, good pay, excellent living quarters, & a wholly foreign owned company!

BUT, will this be a waste of time for learning mandarin or not?

As the official language of China, Mandarin will be useful throughout the country. Even in Guizhou, I'm willing to bet that the Chinese co-workers in your foreign owned company are not Miao and Dong tribesmen.

You should seek out more wisdom from Channamasala, our resident Guizhou Residence expert who recently worked a contract in Zunyi.

Channamasala hasn't been in for ages, not sure if she still visits. I'll see if she can be persuaded to make a special appearance.

Member liuzhou is also based down that way.

My current opinion on provinical living (stolen from someone on here, can't remember who) is that the skill of dealing with dialects / strong accents is transferable and you will then find it easier to deal with others - making it a lot easier to travel / deal with people from all over.
