Other words seem to have more clearcut usage as regards to tone and word function 钻 1st tone 'to drill' 4th tone 'diamond' etc. Quote

LaoJian Posted August 19, 2011 at 06:07 AM Report Posted August 19, 2011 at 06:07 AM 应 ying1 1. Answer/reply/respond. 应答 2. family name(姓), if you know Chinese 百家姓 3. should 应该 4. promise to do sth 应允,应许,应准 ying4 1. Answer/reply/respond. 应答(both 1 and 4),答应, 回应,响应, 应敌 2. sth comes true; be confirmed; 应验, 感应 3. comfort to,submit to, comply with 顺应, 顺应天意 4. deal with 应付 above is a summary just what I know about usage of 应, notice one thing, I think for meaning of 'answer, reply', tone 4 are still very common in Chinese, and in total for '应', tone 4 is also more popular to be used. Hope this can help you, if you understand, just '回应一声' 2 Quote

LaoJian Posted August 19, 2011 at 09:57 AM Report Posted August 19, 2011 at 09:57 AM Yes, what I remember and a popular way of Chinese people using is ying4 for '应答', but for double check, so I look up again from here - http://hanyu.iciba.com/wiki/227262.shtml#1(iciba is famous website for en-cn/cn-en translation site in China), refer to '汉语词典', it said this is applied for both tone 1 and 4. :o 1 Quote
jbradfor Posted August 19, 2011 at 07:30 PM Report Posted August 19, 2011 at 07:30 PM FWIW, TW MOE dictionary only gives 4th tone for 應答. 效應 is another use of 应, also 4th tone. . family name(姓), if you know Chinese 百家姓 I don't follow. How is 应 related to 姓? Last, small warning. nciku is known for having some errors, especially in cases such as these in which there is a very subtle difference. For these types of questions, I would recommend a more professionally done dictionary, e.g. TW MOE (although that defines the Taiwan standard, not the mainland standard), or a good paper dictionary. creamyhorror Posted August 19, 2011 at 07:37 PM Report Posted August 19, 2011 at 07:37 PM I don't follow. How is 应 related to 姓? Meaning that 应 ying1 is a family name (姓). Quote

imron Posted August 20, 2011 at 04:48 AM Report Posted August 20, 2011 at 04:48 AM There's always 百度词典 for the mainland standard. Ugh. Doesn't even have pronunciation. Please see the 《现代汉语词典》for the mainland standard. Regarding 应,don't forget there's also 答应 in which 应 is pronounced with the neutral tone (at least in regular speech anyway ). Edit: Seem it does have pronunciation, it was just taking a while to load it Quote
