xiaozhan Posted August 22, 2011 at 08:02 AM Report Posted August 22, 2011 at 08:02 AM I want to change my student visa to a work visa. I have been told that the most straight forward way to do this is to go to Hong Kong when my current student visa is about to run out, then apply for a travel visa in Honk Kong, then convert my travel visa to a work visa once I am back in the mainland with the help of my employer. Can anybody tell me if that is correct and what it actually involves? Thanks is advance Quote
jbradfor Posted August 22, 2011 at 03:08 PM Report Posted August 22, 2011 at 03:08 PM You might want to read this thread (or at least pages 3-4 of it). Is there some reason you can't get a work visa directly in Hong Hong? It seems it would save you a step. Quote
xiaozhan Posted August 23, 2011 at 09:53 AM Author Report Posted August 23, 2011 at 09:53 AM jbradfor, thanks for the link there was a lot of useful info there. As for getting a work visa directly in Hong Kong, though I'm not 100% clear about it because the conversation was in Chinese, I understand that the company I will be working for needs to apply locally as part of the process, and that they have to do this within 15days of me entering the country, which is why I have to make the trip to Hong Kong (but I could be wrong!). roddy Posted August 23, 2011 at 09:57 AM Report Posted August 23, 2011 at 09:57 AM Not sure it'll make a lot of difference to you if you get a tourist visa then convert it, or get the work visa in Hong Kong. Maybe make sure the company is aware that you could get it in Hong Kong if they can come up with the documents. My only concern would be - can they actually do the conversion, or are they planning to string you along with tourist or business visa extensions. Quote
xiaozhan Posted August 23, 2011 at 12:55 PM Author Report Posted August 23, 2011 at 12:55 PM I'll see what they say about getting the work visa in Hong Kong. As for, can they actually do the conversion, its a Japanese company with a few Japanese guys working there, so I'm hoping its legit! Quote
jbradfor Posted August 23, 2011 at 02:42 PM Report Posted August 23, 2011 at 02:42 PM I understand that the company I will be working for needs to apply locally as part of the process, and that they have to do this within 15days of me entering the country, which is why I have to make the trip to Hong Kong (but I could be wrong!). As I understand it, to get a work visa, the company needs to get you an official form. You need this form for your Z-visa. Once in the country you have 30 days to convert to a residence permit, which you can do yourself. We need a CFC China Visa FAQ. If I get bored maybe I'll do that today. [Looks at calendar.] Nope, won't be today. [Looks again.] Won't be tomorrow either. Any takers? Quote
