New Members ajlouie Posted August 27, 2011 at 08:09 PM New Members Report Share Posted August 27, 2011 at 08:09 PM This stone lintel (the crossbar at the top of a door or gateway) was found in the village near my family's ancestral home southwest of Foshan in Guangdong: http://anony.ws/di-ZJ8Y.jpg I know the second character is 公 ("public", I think), and the middle character is Louie (雷 = "thunder"), my surname. However, I've been unable to translate anything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
skylee Posted August 27, 2011 at 11:44 PM Report Share Posted August 27, 2011 at 11:44 PM It should be read from right to left. I think it is (from left to right here) 質直雷公祠. 質直 (zhi zhi) means upright. Or alternatively it might be the name of a place. 雷公 (lei gong) means thunder god, or in your case perhaps the elders/ancesters of the the Lei/Louie-surnamed people of the village. 祠 (ci) means the ancestral hall.
New Members ajlouie Posted August 30, 2011 at 01:27 AM Author New Members Report Share Posted August 30, 2011 at 01:27 AM Thanks so much! It looks like this might be the same place. The modern name is 方壮雷公祠, which seems to have roughly the same meaning. Am I on the right track?
