sunyata Posted December 24, 2004 at 06:16 AM Report Posted December 24, 2004 at 06:16 AM Has anyone had their vision corrected in China or elsewhere? Just contemplating doing this in Beijing, but I've heard mixed responses. I know one person who did it at 同仁医院 in Beijing about 4 years ago and since then he hasn't had any problems. Also know someone who did it in Canada with good results... On the other hand, a Chinese friend recommended against it. Apparently, their family friend does these vision corrections in Qingdao, but has neither performed it on her own children nor advised her friends to do it. Quote
skylee Posted December 24, 2004 at 12:31 PM Report Posted December 24, 2004 at 12:31 PM It seems to be very popular in HK. Hospitals/doctors are promoting it. Credit card companies offer instalment plans for it. I have been thinking about it for a long time but still wouldn't dare. One of my colleagues (a man) actually had the operation. And we didn't know it at all (he had been wearing contact lenses) until he mentioned it. He made it sound very easy and safe. All he did was to join some seminars to learn about the operation, signed up, had his eyes checked several times, took a day off for the operation, returned to work the next day, and had his eyes monitored for about one month. I think he paid about HKD15,000 for it. Quote
lpascoe Posted January 8, 2005 at 07:11 AM Report Posted January 8, 2005 at 07:11 AM It is also popular in Taiwan. A couple of my friends have had it done. They are happy with the results. However, I notice most of the doctors I meet here wear glasses! Quote
pazu Posted January 8, 2005 at 11:41 AM Report Posted January 8, 2005 at 11:41 AM Perhaps you should check out how much it costs in Bangkok, it seems that it's a cheaper and safer medical center in Asia now. Quote
madizi Posted January 8, 2005 at 05:13 PM Report Posted January 8, 2005 at 05:13 PM Could someone please explain to me how this opeartion is made? I wear glasses and my diopter is -2.75 (maybe too low for operation), but it's getting worse. What kind of procedure do doctors use? Quote
skylee Posted January 9, 2005 at 12:14 AM Report Posted January 9, 2005 at 12:14 AM Take a look -> http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/lasik/ http://www.bumrungrad.com/cm/clinics/eyelaser.asp (a bangkok hospital as pazu has suggested ) Search for "LASIK" and you will find more information. Quote
39degN Posted January 9, 2005 at 03:31 PM Report Posted January 9, 2005 at 03:31 PM one of my classmates got the operation in beijing 1+ year ago, which costs RMB9000, seems it works fine for him so far...another girl planed to have it too, i m not sure if she realized it, she's sent me a link of the operation video, its pretty scary. the link is now invalid though. Ken Posted February 7, 2005 at 09:10 PM Report Posted February 7, 2005 at 09:10 PM I came across a book which you can legally download from the link below. If you have the discipline to do some of the exercises, you may improve your vision without intervention or glasses. http://www.iblindness.org/books/bates/ Quote
sunyata Posted February 8, 2005 at 01:00 AM Author Report Posted February 8, 2005 at 01:00 AM Thanks, Ken - I've actually skimmed through this book before, it's quite interesting. The only problem is - it's a bit difficult and time-consuming to do the excercises. Takes some discipline and motivation. I've heard that there is a newer technology, which is better than LASIK - more precise with much less scarring. There are only a few centers in the world that do it though. Anyone know about it? Ken Posted February 8, 2005 at 03:20 AM Report Posted February 8, 2005 at 03:20 AM Irreversible procedures should be considered carefully. Be sure to check out the doctor who will do the procedure. How many procedures has he done? Success rate? Results should be the focus not cost. I would NOT consider having both eyes done at the same time. Re: eye exercises. I do not know whether they would really resolve your situation. Years ago, I obtained an eye exercise tool call an Ortho-Fuser. I had to wear 3-d glasses while looking at letters and figures embedded in see-through plastic. It forced my eyes muscles to converge or diverge depending on the exercise. It really improved my vision. There were several pages in the "ortho fuser" which was mfg by Bausch and Lomb. Some airline pilots use these tools to keep their vision sharp---especially for their flight fitness exams. If you have glasses, contact the doctor who prescribed them to see if he will assist you in purchasing one. I think they are designed to resolve different conditions. My problem was convergence and depth perception. Many eye doctors do not believe in them because patients do not want to do the exercises. Hao yun, Ken Quote
