trisha2766 Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:04 AM Report Share Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:04 AM On China Sprout's web site they have some earrings with characters on them. In the description they list one as being: "Prosperity" (lu) , but I haven't found anything in any dictionary so far that has a word that means prosperity that sounds anything like 'lu'. Here's the page on their site with it: http://www.chinasprout.com/shop/A777 - and they have pictures of the earrings with the other characters that they have, but not with this one. I emailed them, but have no idea when I might hear back from them being so close to a holiday. So what do you think? Is the pinyin wrong? The translation? Or do I just have bad dictionaries? trisha2766 Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:41 AM Author Report Share Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:41 AM Ok, then the answer is: I have bad dictionaries. I looked it up in my Oxford dictionary and at nciku and both tell me it means "official pay". Thanks! In another thread I asked for suggestions for a better dictionary maybe I'll get some good replies!
creamyhorror Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:42 AM Report Share Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:42 AM Yeah, it would be 禄. There's a building called 福禄寿 Complex here. Ok, then the answer is: I have bad dictionaries. I looked it up in my Oxford dictionary and at nciku and both tell me it means "official pay". Thanks! Actually, the Xiandai Hanyu Cidian only defines it as "official's salary" (古代官吏的俸给). If even a mainline Chinese-Chinese dictionary has only that definition, then your Oxford dictionary isn't necessary behind. nciku is a pretty good source, IMO, and you get sample usages in it. The Guoji Biaozhun Hanzi Dacidian has the "good fortune" definition (福).
trisha2766 Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:58 AM Author Report Share Posted September 2, 2011 at 06:58 AM Thanks again! I still need a new dictionary though. The sample sentences at nciku tend to be pretty complex sentences. I'd like a dictionary with some simple, basic sentences.
