roddy Posted September 9, 2011 at 11:41 AM Report Posted September 9, 2011 at 11:41 AM This is possibly old news for many, but just in case - Spotify users, there's actually a fair amount of Chinese music on there, searchable and for free (if like me you're a free user, anyway, and perhaps depending on where you are). Just doing a search for 的 brings up, and only picking out the artists I recognize, Stefanie Sun, Xu Wei, Carsick Cars, My Little Airport, 果味VC - it's a bit random, and there's a mix of Chinese, Pinyin and English and . . oooh, New Pants. Modern Sky stuff. Xu Wei leads you to Dao Lang to Na Ying to hmmm, never mind. But anyway, maybe worth a look. 1 Quote

chiuyan Posted September 9, 2011 at 01:03 PM Report Posted September 9, 2011 at 01:03 PM I actually haven't had much luck searching for music on spotify using Chinese characters. For example, searching for 王菲 finds nearly nothing but searching for Faye Wong finds hundreds of her songs. But yeah Spotify (in Europe anyway as I know licensing laws are different in the US) has quite a lot of Chinese music. They are a little bit behind (They don't seem to have any albums from 2011 yet, but many from 2010 and older). Even a lot of stuff iTunes doesn't have, like Tonick Quote
Mike N Posted September 9, 2011 at 02:22 PM Report Posted September 9, 2011 at 02:22 PM Thanks for this Roddy. I've searched for Chinese music on Spotify before, but I've been unsuccessful. Since I don't listen to much Chinese music, I've never really known what to search for. 的 seems like a pretty good place to start. ;) Quote
jkhsu Posted September 9, 2011 at 04:40 PM Report Posted September 9, 2011 at 04:40 PM I've always found my Chinese music on mp3.sogou.com. There is actually a fair amount of English songs on there also. Just type in the name of the song and the artist and you can find most songs. Once you're in the results page, click on the 链接 link to get the popup window with the link to the file. Then just do a save as on the link to the file. Edit: You should observe the copyright rules for your country. Quote
Koxinga Posted September 9, 2011 at 06:59 PM Report Posted September 9, 2011 at 06:59 PM For some reason, if I use a US account, half the Chinese music won't play. I switched to UK, and all music magically started playing normally Quote
joshuawbb Posted September 10, 2011 at 01:28 AM Report Posted September 10, 2011 at 01:28 AM I heard Spotify is quite popular in Europe, what's it like? From within China I get my music from Google - music.google.cn which from within China is entirely legal. Wonder if they succeeded in making a dent against Baidu's MP3 section or not. Doubt it, but anyway. Huge database of music from many countries, and about 95% can all be downloaded, mostly in high quality. Quote
semantic nuance Posted September 10, 2011 at 02:57 AM Report Posted September 10, 2011 at 02:57 AM Not availalbe in Taiwan. Just checked it out now. Quote

roddy Posted June 12, 2013 at 11:59 AM Author Report Posted June 12, 2013 at 11:59 AM Having just coughed up for a premium Spotify account, thought I'd bump this - any recommendations for music that's on Spotify? They've got the 万能青年路店s (as the Omnipotent Youth Society) Quote
Joseph Kimbrell Posted July 18, 2013 at 12:25 PM Report Posted July 18, 2013 at 12:25 PM I'd love to know this too. When working on a language I really like listening to music in that language...and you discover a lot of amazing stuff too Quote
roddy Posted August 2, 2013 at 01:04 PM Author Report Posted August 2, 2013 at 01:04 PM This is quite possibly the saddest thing an algorithm has ever done... Quote
Guest realmayo Posted August 2, 2013 at 02:37 PM Report Posted August 2, 2013 at 02:37 PM Maybe it was an algorithm with Chinese characteristics? Quote
Guest realmayo Posted August 2, 2013 at 02:37 PM Report Posted August 2, 2013 at 02:37 PM Incidentally I saw Sa Dingding's new (newish?) album was up on Spotify and the two earlier ones are no longer there. Quote
roddy Posted August 8, 2013 at 10:22 AM Author Report Posted August 8, 2013 at 10:22 AM I've found... 许巍 花儿乐队 崔健 as noted earlier Oh, and 新裤子 but you have to search for New Pants Quote
roddy Posted November 25, 2013 at 02:19 PM Author Report Posted November 25, 2013 at 02:19 PM Also: 二手玫瑰 as Second Hand Rose Hanggai (Ok, 'Chinese' doesn't quite cover it) Quote
