Could anyone help me identify the markings on the bottom of this bronzepost-45201-0-18513100-1316459556_thumb.jpgpost-45201-0-87258000-1316459650_thumb.jpgpost-45201-0-90273800-1316459674_thumb.jpg vase and it's possible use? It's been in the family since the 1880's. Thank you.

Should be 大明宣德年製 (made during the Xuande period 1424-1435 of the Ming Dynasty)

Thank you..would you have any idea of it's use? We have a photo of my ancestors in Hong Kong in 1887 with this vase shown on a shelf. We do not have any idea how they acquired it.

If you live near a University with an Asian Languages and Cultures department (or something similar) or an Art History department with a specialist on East Asian art, that might be your best bet for finding out what it was intended for. Or a museum with a strong East Asian collection. Just send an email mentioning you have a Ming Dynasty vase and would like them to take a look at it if they have time. I think that would probably pique their interest. I'd be interested to hear what you find out about it!
