Learningmandarin Posted September 20, 2011 at 03:56 AM Report Share Posted September 20, 2011 at 03:56 AM I started taking CHinese this semester in college. My professor assigned names to all of us, and I think mine might be a little mean. My last name is Gerrety, so I think he was trying to assign chinese names that sounded like our sirnames. He gave me Ge(1) Lei(3)-Ti2)or 鬲 累褆. Is this a masculine of femanine name, and could he have thought of a better one that sounds like Gerrety. I am a girl, and he kept saying that Ge, is the first part of gay, which does not make sense. Any advice would be great. I guess lei-ti means to accumulate happiness. It just sounds a lot like gay lady to me, and I think that's what he was going for...
Peter2010 Posted September 20, 2011 at 08:09 AM Report Share Posted September 20, 2011 at 08:09 AM 鬲 累褆 seems weird. 葛瑞迪 (ge3 rui4 di2) would make much more sense.
skylee Posted September 20, 2011 at 01:21 PM Report Share Posted September 20, 2011 at 01:21 PM I agree that 葛瑞迪 (ge3 rui4 di2) is better. Or you could also consider 葛睿迪 or 葛蕊媞.
imron Posted September 21, 2011 at 05:12 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2011 at 05:12 AM Are there any common surnames pronunced jie? That might be better in this case depending on how the 'Ge' in Gerrety is pronounced.
skylee Posted September 21, 2011 at 06:18 AM Report Share Posted September 21, 2011 at 06:18 AM Are there any common surnames pronunced jie? According to the Lin Yutang Dictionary 捷 and 介 are surnames, but they don't seem to be common.

Learningmandarin Posted September 21, 2011 at 07:03 AM Author Report Share Posted September 21, 2011 at 07:03 AM Thanks all. I have e-mailed my professor, kida nervous about it! My name is not pronounced with the j sound, rather the G sound. Like in "gather", or "goat". I e-mailed my professor the suggested three names. Are they all female? Lu Posted September 24, 2011 at 08:26 AM Report Share Posted September 24, 2011 at 08:26 AM 葛蕊媞 is female, the others can be for either a man or a woman, I think. I agree that the name your teacher picked seems a bit weird. Never seen that 鬲 before.
