xuechengfeng Posted December 28, 2004 at 06:51 AM Report Posted December 28, 2004 at 06:51 AM I'll post what phrases are taught in each lesson, and how well I think the program is working. I'm starting on Mandarin 2 since I've already had a year of Chinese. Most of this was pretty much review for me, but so far the method looks very helpful. It's really good at drilling down the sentence patterns, had a few useful grammar points for shi...de, and le, and also is already helping my tones. New Vocab 待 - dai4 - stay 一起 - yi1qi3 - together Quote
xuechengfeng Posted December 30, 2004 at 06:34 AM Author Report Posted December 30, 2004 at 06:34 AM 第二課 Dan, Chengde 你去了嗎﹖ 還沒有去。 New vocab 失陪 - shi1pei2 - to excuse Quote
beirne Posted December 30, 2004 at 12:45 PM Report Posted December 30, 2004 at 12:45 PM I'm curious about something. When I took the introductory Pimsleur courses the instructions said not to write anything down but just listen. Are you finding that approach hard to do, or did the method change? Quote
xuechengfeng Posted December 30, 2004 at 01:46 PM Author Report Posted December 30, 2004 at 01:46 PM What I've been doing is completely listening the first day and repeating, then the second day, I listen to the same lesson and repeat, with pauses to write it down just for my own purposes. What those purposes were, I'm not sure, but I have found that it's helping me type out sentences with characters 10 times faster. Quote

Haoqide Posted February 7, 2005 at 01:35 PM Report Posted February 7, 2005 at 01:35 PM Does anybody know of a program that's pretty good that picks up where Pimsleur Mandarin III leaves off? I've finished part III, and I'd like to keep going, but I don't know what's out there. Any ideas? Thanks! Quote
the_p0et Posted March 13, 2005 at 02:26 PM Report Posted March 13, 2005 at 02:26 PM Does anyone have a transcript of 2 or 3? Pimsleur Companion 2 or 3. All I have is 1 which was very helpful and would love to find the same for 2 or 3. Thanks. Quote
shady Posted March 15, 2005 at 04:57 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 04:57 PM Yes, i second that. Would be extremely useful to have a companion book for II and III, since the first was an amazingly good help. Quote
rockytriton Posted March 15, 2005 at 06:31 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 06:31 PM I don't think that a companion for II or III exist. From what I heard the companion for I was not a pimsluer file, it was made by some 3rd party and it doesn't seem that one exists for II or III. This is too bad, they should really distribute this with the series instead of the lame book that comes with them. Quote
shady Posted March 15, 2005 at 06:44 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 06:44 PM Yes, the book is totally useless to use it as a study help. At first sight I thought it was a transscript or some additional information about each lesson, but I was disappointed as soon as I opened it. Seriously, the information in that book is something you can easily get from sources elsewhere. But, as you know, hope dies last ;) Quote
rockytriton Posted March 15, 2005 at 07:44 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 07:44 PM Yea, maybe it would be a good exercise to write the PDF (or Word document) yourself. That way you go through the content of the lessons more thoroughly and have a better understanding that just reading the file. Oh yea, and if you do this, send me a copy of that document please Quote
shady Posted March 15, 2005 at 07:52 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 07:52 PM I'd love to do that, but I'm soooo busy at the moment. Why don't you start doing it, and I may join you later? If you finish in the meantime, be sure to send me a copy *shift-workload* Quote
Tyr Posted March 15, 2005 at 11:53 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 11:53 PM Hi thanks for posting this. Is there any chance I can get the pinyin and english translation of the lessons? This would be very useful for me. Quote
beirne Posted March 16, 2005 at 12:22 AM Report Posted March 16, 2005 at 12:22 AM There is a lot of talk here about writing down the lessons or seeing them in printed form. The point of the Pimsleur method is that you learn via listening. The lessons repeat things a lot to provide reinforcement. It would seem that the need to write things down shows that the system has failed. What is the benefit of written transcripts? Quote
the_p0et Posted March 16, 2005 at 01:19 AM Report Posted March 16, 2005 at 01:19 AM For the first Unit, I stick with the Pimsleur approach and did nothing but sit back and listen to each lesson at least 1 time through, then the 2nd time through I would write down anything I didn't remember. I'm also trying to learn the characters and learned quite a few from the pimsleur companion I file. I'm half-way through writing a file for Unit II, but it only has pinyin and English for the words that I think are new to that lesson. The downside is that I don't know which character goes with which pinyin so there's no characters. Quote
Chili Posted March 16, 2005 at 06:43 PM Report Posted March 16, 2005 at 06:43 PM Hi At this address you convert between pinyin and simplified/traditional charaters. You can also translate both ways. It is the best tool I have seen so far: http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=simplesearch&PHPSESSID=c77357b0e424d3de75df4e658bcb848b Quote
