animal world Posted September 22, 2011 at 03:00 AM Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 at 03:00 AM Good evening, everybody! I haven't been here for a good while but once again I have a problem with Mnemosyne and hope someone at the forum can shed some light. I understand I must be about the only person left who is still using Mnemosyne but I am used to it and never cared much for Anki. I am using my older laptop for doing my Mnemosyne daily (yes!) drill and it is just about the only thing i am using that laptop for; don't even go on the internet with it, etc. Tonight I booted this computer and clicked on Mnemosyne and got a tiny message that said it was unable to open the program. I had never before seen this message. Immediately I got the normal Mnemosyne screen and felt relief until I noticed that the screen had a ~tmp label and it contained ... absolutely no data. I know for a fact that I closed it properly, etc. It's not the end of the world because i also have Mnemosyne and all its data on my new computer. But i've never used this and therefore will need to start each category at zero because the categories there have no ratings. Anyone knows why i was unable to open the program and got a ~tmp file instead? Any idea how i can access the regular files with my ratings, etc., on my old laptop? cababunga Posted September 22, 2011 at 03:22 AM Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 at 03:22 AM I don't use Mnemosyne myseld, but here is a page that may give you some ideas on what you can do: http://www.mnemosyne...bleshooting.php Restoring from Mnemosyne's Automatic Backups If something terrible happened to your collection, you can restore from Mnemosyne's automatic backup. To do this, open the backups directory in your .mnemosyne directory (in your home directory). Next, unzip the file you want to restore from. Then, open Mnemosyne and import this xml file into a new database.
animal world Posted September 22, 2011 at 05:49 AM Author Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 at 05:49 AM Thanks very much. I was looking at my backup files but didn't think of importing it to my Mnemosyne as i thought this is totally corrupted. But the suggestion is probably correct and worth a try. Come to think of it, one of the backup files i should also use for Mnemosyne on my new computer because that way the rankings are preserved. I would hate to start all over again with something like 15,000 entries. I am still clueless what went wrong to begin with. Update: i just did the restore as quoted in the post above and ... golly, it worked like a charm. So, everything is fine again in my Mnemosyne Land. Rather feel stupid that i didn't think about this but when i saw zero data in a ~tmp Mnemosyne i experienced a panic attack. Furthermore, i am one of those people who never read instructions manuals when assembling something...
roddy Posted September 22, 2011 at 08:03 AM Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 at 08:03 AM You should just be able to transfer one of those backups onto your new laptop and use that if it makes things easier - and even if you prefer using the old one for some reason, it would make sense to keep backups somewhere. Scoobyqueen Posted September 22, 2011 at 12:22 PM Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 at 12:22 PM I asked a similar question here (back up file) and I got the answer which I now can't remember. Have you searched the forums. You are not the only one using Mnemosyne.
animal world Posted September 22, 2011 at 01:31 PM Author Report Share Posted September 22, 2011 at 01:31 PM As i was waiting for a first reply, I remembered the .Mnemosyne file and the backups. There was the solution, of course. I didn't realize that i could simply import the latest backup and be done. I assumed i would have to delete Mnemosyne first because it seemed corrupt, hang on to the backups, reinstall Mnemosyne and import the backup. I probably should still do so because Mnemosyne still shows the ~tmp label. I am still wondering what caused the problem. I'll search the forums, too. Edit: S Queen, just found your forum post; it's a different problem.
murrayjames Posted September 23, 2011 at 12:13 AM Report Share Posted September 23, 2011 at 12:13 AM I use Mnemosyne for Chinese too. If you have Mnemosyne questions, you may want to try their Google group (which the program developers post on): mnemosyne-proj-users@googlegroups.com . If you want to try Mnemosyne 2, which is in Beta, you can get it by subscribing to the list. I use it--just imported my old cards from Mnemosyne 1.x--and I like it a lot.
