baihe shifu Posted September 26, 2011 at 09:27 AM Report Share Posted September 26, 2011 at 09:27 AM Hello, I really need the following names translated into Chinese hanzi for use on martial arts certificates. If anyone can help I would be most grateful: * Jon Dupre * Jamie Ronald Close * Sergio De Francesco
Gymnosopher Posted September 26, 2011 at 12:53 PM Report Share Posted September 26, 2011 at 12:53 PM If by translated you mean transliterated (i.e. just using Chinese to get a similar sound) that's one thing whereas actual translation could mean getting a Chinese name with a similar meaning - whilst students of Chinese often go for something completely new/unrelated. Also, Chinese names often only have 2 or 3 syllables so the latter two with 5 and 8 would be pretty awkward in Chinese. So that said, you can use the website here http://www.mandarintools.com/chinesename.html to make new names (I'm guessing you'll go with strength and power) which will have legitimate Chinese meanings that your martial arts students might appreciate. imron Posted September 26, 2011 at 10:45 PM Report Share Posted September 26, 2011 at 10:45 PM Have a read of this post to see why you cannot really do this, or at least not in any meaningful way for this situation. Personally, I think you'd be better off leaving the names in English.
jbradfor Posted September 27, 2011 at 07:22 PM Report Share Posted September 27, 2011 at 07:22 PM Save your breath. The OP was already told this last year, but apparently doesn't care.
jkhsu Posted September 27, 2011 at 07:47 PM Report Share Posted September 27, 2011 at 07:47 PM According to the link from last year that jbradfor posted, the OP wants to have the names translated by: "1) Preserve the basic sound, but have no meaning." (based on imron's link) I guess the OP will have to wait for another helpful native speaker such as rx_11 to step in.
