googed Posted September 30, 2011 at 04:13 PM Report Share Posted September 30, 2011 at 04:13 PM A unique feature of most English dictionaries like the Oxford Learner's dictionary is that they use a limited set of vocabulary (about 3000 words or less) to convey the meanings of all words. Is there such a comprehensive learner's dictionary in Chinese that uses a limited vocabulary and characters for readers? Most like the 新华词典 have explanations that are often more difficult than the main entry
Don_Horhe Posted October 1, 2011 at 01:16 PM Report Share Posted October 1, 2011 at 01:16 PM Maybe something like 学生词典 or the 新华学生字典 might do.
bande Posted October 1, 2011 at 02:12 PM Report Share Posted October 1, 2011 at 02:12 PM I'm not sure that there's anything quite like what your looking for. However, I have a 同义近义反义词典 that has a limited number of words with the corresponding antonyms and synonyms, but it won't have some useful words that a good monolingual learners dictionary might have. Don_Horhe Posted October 15, 2011 at 03:16 PM Report Share Posted October 15, 2011 at 03:16 PM UPDATE Actually, there is such a dictionary, although it probably wouldn't be very practical to use today. It's called 《中华基本教育小字典》 by 吴廉铭, published in 1948 by 中华书局. According to Zhou Youguang, who mentions it in his 《中国语文的时代演进》, the dictionary contains 5,200 characters, and all the definitions are given using a limited set of 1,600 characters. It's available for sale here: http://book.kongfz.com/10831/75216029/
Iriya Posted October 15, 2011 at 03:25 PM Report Share Posted October 15, 2011 at 03:25 PM 现代汉语词典 is pretty good. And it can be found on the web in the StarDict format. I often reference it on my Android.
