navaburo Posted October 3, 2011 at 11:54 PM Report Share Posted October 3, 2011 at 11:54 PM I'm trying to parse the sentence "这幅画画的是喷泉". I know it means something like "This painting depicts a fountain." However, I'm not sure how the sentence parses (how it breaks down into phrases). My best guess is 这幅画-画的-是-喷泉, with the literal reading "This painting, depicted is a fountain." Any help decoding this sentence, or another example using this grammatical pattern would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Chris
Iriya Posted October 4, 2011 at 12:01 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2011 at 12:01 PM 这个本子上写的是我的名字 I don't know, this is...pretty common? Perhaps it's the two 画 characters in a row that are confusing you?
navaburo Posted October 4, 2011 at 12:05 PM Author Report Share Posted October 4, 2011 at 12:05 PM Thanks Iriya! That example really clarified this for me. Perhaps it is a common pattern. But I'm a beginner, and studying independently, so often I miss simple things.

Iriya Posted October 4, 2011 at 12:31 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2011 at 12:31 PM Some more examples of this pattern: 他今天穿的是西装。 我刚才吃的是回锅肉。 你学的是什么专业? 是 is often dropped in colloquial speech, e.g. 你吃饭了吗?吃的什么?
Daan Posted October 4, 2011 at 01:43 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2011 at 01:43 PM It may help to see 这幅画 as a topic here, rather than as the grammatical subject of this sentence. You could mentally translate it as "as to this painting, ...".

creamyhorror Posted October 4, 2011 at 04:17 PM Report Share Posted October 4, 2011 at 04:17 PM Here's a structural breakdown of the sentence: [这幅画] [画的] 是 [喷泉] = [这幅画] [(所)画的] [是] [喷泉] = [(In) this picture] [that which is drawn] [is] [a fountain]
