tlr Posted January 1, 2005 at 10:03 PM Report Posted January 1, 2005 at 10:03 PM My girlfriend's mother was given a piece of art. I recognize it as Chinese and would love to know more about the piece and the characters/scene depicted, as well as a guess at when it was carved. My best guess so far is that this is a scene from "A Journey to the West" as I see the Monkey King and Pigsy and so on, it seems. But I'm not sure... your thoughts? It's supposed to be a valuable carving, cut from a single piece of wood. There are no apparent identifying marks by the artist. Full front photo Center detail Top left detail Quote
confucius Posted January 2, 2005 at 06:03 AM Report Posted January 2, 2005 at 06:03 AM It does indeed depict scenes from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which dates your piece of art back to the Qing dynasty. I am going to guess mid 19th century, as detailed wood carvings of Journey to the West scenes were extremely popular at that time in areas around Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces. Quote
tlr Posted January 3, 2005 at 11:25 AM Author Report Posted January 3, 2005 at 11:25 AM Very cool.. thank you for the response! It seems that alot of antiques sold on eBay and so on come from the Qing dynasty. Kind of a shame that so many are exported from the country to other nations and sold cheaply. Swords, statuettes, etc. Quote
