New Members Niteshade Posted October 18, 2011 at 05:05 AM New Members Report Posted October 18, 2011 at 05:05 AM Hi all, First, I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. You know how the chinese character, 忍, has that phrase 一把刀插在心上... I was wondering if anybody knows any other characters that have similar patterns or similar hidden meanings. Where if you break up the character, the little bits describe the actual chinese character. Or something similar. Quote
semantic nuance Posted October 18, 2011 at 07:04 AM Report Posted October 18, 2011 at 07:04 AM This reminds me of telling a kid what '洗' is made up. But of course it is made up by me, and it's not authentic though. I told the kid that you have to have water first, so that you can 'wash' (先要有水,才能洗). Another one is a riddle I heard when I was a kid. The riddle is 自大了一點,and the answer for it is 臭。 Quote

jbradfor Posted October 18, 2011 at 02:42 PM Report Posted October 18, 2011 at 02:42 PM 二人相从,三人成从 I don't get this one. Why isn't it 二人相从,三人成众? Quote
xiaocai Posted October 18, 2011 at 02:55 PM Report Posted October 18, 2011 at 02:55 PM 吃饱没事做 has nothing to do太岁头上动土 offending your superior or someone who will cause profound impact on your life if they are offended. I can't think of more now. To be frank, most chinese idioms answer your question too. e.g. 鸡犬不宁 extremely noisy 跳进黄河洗不清 difficult to prove that you are not guilt. I fail to see how these can answer OP's question. What Chinese characters do these idioms represent? 1 Quote
OneEye Posted October 18, 2011 at 03:02 PM Report Posted October 18, 2011 at 03:02 PM Another one I read in Wilkinson's "Chinese History: A Manual, Revised and Enlarged": 半個朋友不見了。 月 1 Quote
xiaocai Posted October 18, 2011 at 03:04 PM Report Posted October 18, 2011 at 03:04 PM If you read his question carefully, it actually says: I was wondering if anybody knows any other characters that have similar patterns or similar hidden meanings. Anyways, there is one I can remember 裕, 就是有吃(谷)又有穿(衣.) Just found a funny one: 综合门市: 闹. Oh, this is probably the most well known one: 日月同辉: 明. @ Danny2312 Well don't need to say sorry to me, just think of some good ones to give to OP. Quote

muirm Posted November 4, 2011 at 10:55 AM Report Posted November 4, 2011 at 10:55 AM Not exactly what the OP is looking for, but here are two 字谜 I know: 上面去下面,下面去上面 至 上上下下,不上不下 卡 And then there is the classic mnemonic I used to remember 杯: "What's not wood? Well, a cup of course!" I know it is wrong for a couple reasons, but the silly mnemonics always seem to stick better. Quote
