Stroke direction of 厂?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Newbie question! It seems to me that the horizontal part of 厂 may be written either from right to left (as is 反) or from left to right (as in 唇 床)? Am I right, or do any of my examples in fact not contain that stroke, but a similar one which is drawn in the other direction? How can I tell? Will I always be able to deduce the stroke direction if I look close enough?

The top stroke is left-to-right if it's flat, and right-to-left if it rises slightly on the right. It's tricky to spot but the difference is usually visible.

See for example these characters on a larger scale. On 厂 the top stroke is clearly horizontal, on 反 it is slightly angled.

It is the difference between 橫 (horizontal) stroke (from left to right) and a 撇 (slanting/lower on the left) stroke (from right to left).

Edit - I have edited this post, The left/right in the previous version were all wrong.

Stroke order is quite difficult for native chinese as well. For example: 冉、毋、火、臾, can everyone write in the right order?
