MaLaTang Posted November 5, 2011 at 12:54 AM Report Posted November 5, 2011 at 12:54 AM i came across this sentence... 本报北京11月9日讯记者张道冀南报... here ben means 'this', as in 'this newspaper' ... ok here's the question, instead of using ‘这辆车’ or '这条路‘ , is it possible to use '本车’ or '本路‘ instead? im guessing not, but just to be sure... imron Posted November 5, 2011 at 02:35 AM Report Posted November 5, 2011 at 02:35 AM In the context of 'this', 本 usually refers to either one's self, or something that is current. 本报 is fine because it's referring to itself, I don't think 本车 is really that acceptable, however if for example you were on a train you could use 本次列车 to refer to the current train you were on, e.g.下一站,是本次列车的终点站 My dictionary says: [代]指自己或自己方面的 :本人|本国|本单位 [代]现今的:本世纪|本年|本届大会 Quote
Nakura Posted November 5, 2011 at 11:44 AM Report Posted November 5, 2011 at 11:44 AM No, in that sentence 本 does not mean "this"." 本" refers to the speaker or the author himself. For example, 本人=我 本报 the newspaper which the correspondent write for; 本次列车:the train on which the conducter works 这=this, so, when you say 这人or 这个人,of course it does not refer to yourself. Quote
Iriya Posted November 5, 2011 at 12:26 PM Report Posted November 5, 2011 at 12:26 PM 本 doesn't necessarily refer to the speaker. Here's a few examples: 你的头像是你本人吗? Is your user picture you yourself? 你还没见过我,也许你会觉得我本人太丑了。 You haven't seen me [in person] yet, you might think that I'm [in person] too ugly. 你是本地人吗? Are you a local? 本地 is this (as in current) place, 外地 is other places, 当地 is the place that the speaker is talking about, but not necessarily being at. Compare 当时. 1 Quote
imron Posted November 5, 2011 at 08:34 PM Report Posted November 5, 2011 at 08:34 PM For example, 本人=我 本报 the newspaper which the correspondent write for; Which in English can be simplified to 'this newspaper' when the newspaper is referring to itself. It's not a broad replacement for 'this' and only applies for the situations I mentioned in my original reply. Quote
New Members charliechen Posted November 6, 2011 at 03:03 PM New Members Report Posted November 6, 2011 at 03:03 PM >My dictionary says: >[代]指自己或自己方面的 :本人|本国|本单位 >[代]现今的:本世纪|本年|本届大会 本 can also be used as a measure word, such as 一/本/书. About the measure words, you can check http://mandarin.about.com/od/grammar/a/measure_words.htm "ok here's the question, instead of using ‘这辆车’ or '这条路‘ , is it possible to use '本车’ or '本路‘ instead? im guessing not, but just to be sure..." Here, 这/辆/车 辆 is also a measure word. Quote
