lpascoe Posted January 6, 2005 at 04:14 PM Report Posted January 6, 2005 at 04:14 PM When I take a taxi in Taiwan, if the driver bothers to talk to me, there is a 90% chance he will give me advice on who to marry. It starts like this... How old are you? 28 Are you married? No <gasp... note: I was getting gasps when the answer was 26> Do you have a boyfriend? No <gasp> You should hurry up. What follows varies. Taxi drivers who have already asked me how much I earn in a month (generally, question number 2, straight after "Are you American?") have usually oftered to set me up with an unmarried relative. One time, a particularly concerned driver gave me quite the lecture. He said not to marry a Westerner because Western men are odd. Taiwanese families might be a bit too traditional for me and I might have mother-in-law problems. I should marry a waisheng man because his mother and father might already be dead!?! And that above all, I should not marry a Hakka guy because I would be divorced within a year!!! Is this commonplace? Or am I cursed?! Quote

Lu Posted January 9, 2005 at 03:30 PM Report Posted January 9, 2005 at 03:30 PM I never get that! I often end up having a big political discussion with taxi drivers, really interesting. They don't ask for my income because I'm a student; I don't know why I don't get marriage advice. Quote
