Hann Posted January 6, 2005 at 04:52 PM Report Posted January 6, 2005 at 04:52 PM I was going to drop this in the sports section, but it is actually more of a societal question than a sports question. The Bejing Olympics are being based on three ideas, with one of them being "Green Olympics" I am wondering in the three plus years since Beijing was awarded the Olympics has there been many noticeable changes, and what are your thoughts on these Olympics and the effect it may have on life there? And yes I am aware it is still three years away, but putting an Olympics together is a shocking procedure for any city/country, and usually causes quite a facelift. Quote

roddy Posted July 8, 2005 at 08:02 AM Report Posted July 8, 2005 at 08:02 AM Quarantine issues with the horses, I think, is the official reason, although I would imagine Hong Kong has much better horse-infrastructure, if you like, than Beijing. Quote
wushijiao Posted July 8, 2005 at 08:10 AM Report Posted July 8, 2005 at 08:10 AM I am not sure why it has to be held in Hong Kong, though ... I would guess that this is to increase the Chinese Olymipic spirit in Hong Kong. From Beijing's point of view, this is a friendly way to reinforce patriotism (as opposed to thornily reminding Hong Kongers that they are Chinese and thus that the NPC controls who has the final say over when the popular vote will happen). After the 2004 games, Liu Xiang and other Olympic stars toured Hong Kong, supposedly also to reinforce Chinese patriotism. Quote
laohu489 Posted July 11, 2005 at 07:37 PM Report Posted July 11, 2005 at 07:37 PM you might have a look at this threadhttp://www.chinese-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1098 I keep getting a 404 error when I try to open this link. I actually just got back from Beijing where I was working as an advisor to help the Chinese meet the needs of the foreigners in 2008. This was not my first time in Beijing, although it was my first extended time there. Beijing certainly has changed a lot since the initial announcement. For example, they are building 9 or 10 new subway lines with the goal of having a stop no more than a 10 minute walk from anywhere inside the second ring road. It seems that the government is working a lot more towards pollution, especially in the Beijing area. But like Deng Xiaoping said: "一年小变样,三年大变样." Quote

roddy Posted July 18, 2005 at 03:01 AM Report Posted July 18, 2005 at 03:01 AM Internal links from before the move to VBulletin don't work. I'm fixing these as they come to my attention, but in this case I can't figure out where it should point. If anyone knows, let me know and I'll edit it. Roddy Quote
