Hi everybody. I'm considering going to Xiamen University to study for the International Relations (English Language Program) Master Degree. I was trying to find someone who had actually taken it (or knew someone who took it) to give me some insight into the program before I went through the process of applying. Basically I want to know if it was worth studying there. Since the school is not as big as Tsinghua or BeiDa I worry the quality might suffer, in regards to the teachers, teaching materials, etc.

Some background on me: I've studied Chinese for over four years, lived in Dalian for about two years, Beijing half a year, but now I'm back in the US and looking into possibly going back to China.

Even if someone had info on any of the English language Master Degree Programs in Xiamen that would be great.

Thanks! :)

Well, I guess you are in luck.

I am studying a PhD here for international relations, but in Chinese. Are you planning on applying for the government scholarship?

What do you want to know? and whats called "is it worth it"? Thats a very personal opinion and is up to a different interpretation by well, everybody. Be more specific and I'll try to answer all your questions.

Until then, is a degree from this University worth anything? No idea. Is a degree from any Chinese university really worth anything in the US? I think it has more to do with your personal goals and future plans, as well as what you obtain from any program.

There are quite a few international students in the english masters program. I dont think there is really much variety in what classes they can take. The program is 2 years, with I believe each semester you are having to take classes. The last two semesters you also have to write your thesis.

The city in my opinion is not as developed as Dalian, a little bit more expensive, but has nicer weather.

Hello friends

Can anyone tell me what the Chinese language courses and instruction is like at Xiamen University? Quality? Not so quality? Are the professors engaging/interesting/interested? How big are class sizes? What's the dialect like? What's the night life like? Are the boys cute? ;) What's transportation like re. subway, taxis, etc? DO THEY SELL 串儿 IN THE STREET!? I've only lived in Beijing and Chengdu so the possibility of going to a smaller (but less polluted!) city is slightly weirding me out for some reason but I like to try new things so... Any information about living/studying at Xiamen University would be very welcome and I promise to send some 福 your way in return

EDIT: Never mind, I take it all back. I was a noob and didn't look at the links roddy added before posting.

Any reviews about the dormitories for master students? is there a curfew? any suggestions when booking the dorm?

Posted

@Amanda, depends on your major. IF you are a language student or one of the teaching chinese masters, you will be moved to the new campus off the island which has small dorms and nothing around in terms of shopping, excitement, etc.

IF you remain on the main campus, you will be housed in one of two dorm buildings in a double room. The rooms are OK. Not big, not too small. There are no kitchens. Bathrooms are western toilets. There is AC and internet in the rooms as well as water heaters. There is no curfew and I do not think you can book your dorm in advance, only when you show up for registration.

I'm under the Chinese government scholarship with a masters in international relations, the lady from the admissions office said ill be put in the main campus so that's kinda a relief. But is it possible to still get a single room but pay the difference instead you think?

Some universities allow it. Xiamen University does not. Maybe with less students on campus next semester they will?

Hi guys!

Can somebody help me with some information about Xiamen University? I was admitted to study a major in English there from September, but I applied, and still want to study in Chinese. So I sent several e-mails to the provided adresses (admissions, osao), but I did not get any useful answer. Does anyone know a specific person with conact info, who might be responsible for this kind of things? Or do you think it is possible to change the language of the programme? I have Government Scholarship.

Thank you! :)

Hey all,

I just got notice from the Admissions Office that I have been "nominated" (completely unexpected, seeing as how I applied for it and all...) for the CSC Scholarship! I have actually been pleasantly surprised thus far at the promptness and seemingly orderly email correspondence with the University thus far. Much different to the chaos that was my last experience studying in China (though, to be fair, Zhengzhou University doesn't have nearly as much experience with foreign students as I expect Xiamen U does).

I am excited to start my MCTSOL program this fall, and look forward to meeting anyone who'll be at the university with me (masters, bachelors, non-degree-seeking students, whatever, I look forward to meeting and hanging out with you!).
