Been looking at some lists of common names in China and thought I'd see which names the members of the forum here have encountered before. By "encounter" I mean whether or not you've met or heard of someone with that name. The name lists are sourced here and here. The poll includes both common surnames and given names. Feel free to vote for any given name you've encountered before, even if it was part of a two-syllable name and not used by itself.

kind of made me realize I pay absolutely no attention to given names at all. I find Chinese names in general impossible to remember unless I see them written down. I just refer to all the Chinese people I know as 小王 or 李先生 etc. Why aren't 爽 and 龙 on the given names poll, I feel like those are extremely common, especially 爽.

I'm surprised there's no 愛 under given names. It's very popular for girls to be named with it i.e. 張玲 etc

At my office there are now no less than three 芳s. Two of them are good friends. Fortunately they all have different surnames.

I have only a few Chinese friends. Most of their surnames are common (刘、吴、陈、but also 邹、廖、萧), but their given names don't appear on the list (except for 静): 菲、里甲、小琳、韵之、婷、蓓。

By the way, I edit to add that the order of the surnames is different from the order of given names, and that I don't know the family name of my teacher...
