Pravit Posted January 10, 2005 at 02:17 AM Report Posted January 10, 2005 at 02:17 AM Thanks for the links. Though I don't plan on learning Cantonese now. I found it a bit interesting that the Cantonese numbers seem to have some (probably superficial) similarities to Thai numbers. Compare: Cantonese | Thai -------------------- 3 saam-------saam 4 sei----------si 7 cat----------jet 8 baat--------baat 9 gow--------gao 10 sap-------sip 20 jisap------yisip Quote

Pravit Posted January 10, 2005 at 02:31 AM Report Posted January 10, 2005 at 02:31 AM You mean...Cantonese and Thai are...related???!?!?!?? Quote
ala Posted January 10, 2005 at 02:33 AM Report Posted January 10, 2005 at 02:33 AM No, I mean the numbers are probably loaned, and that the similarity isn't one of romanization coincidence. Quote
Cyberian Posted January 11, 2005 at 10:18 AM Report Posted January 11, 2005 at 10:18 AM 7 in Cantonese is not pronounced "cat". Quote
Claw Posted January 11, 2005 at 02:54 PM Report Posted January 11, 2005 at 02:54 PM It's spelled /cat/ according to the LSHK Jyutping romanization scheme. The /c/ is pronounced very similar to the Hanyu Pinyin /c/ (like a "ts" sound). The /at/ rhymes with the English words, rut, nut, etc. http://www.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/lexi-can/search.php?q=%A4C Quote
