feng Posted December 2, 2011 at 01:55 PM Report Share Posted December 2, 2011 at 01:55 PM Is this something you would use in the company of the inlaws, friends, close friends, enemies, etc? ie 「這就是雅加達呀!該死一百萬次!」
xiaocai Posted December 2, 2011 at 03:48 PM Report Share Posted December 2, 2011 at 03:48 PM I think it is kind of like "damn" in English, not the exact meaning but, how should I say, the level of rudeness?
feng Posted December 3, 2011 at 02:58 AM Author Report Share Posted December 3, 2011 at 02:58 AM I think the best way to describe how rude it is is to describe when it would be used? I have seen this word used in an action film, and read it once in a teenagers comic. So I am not sure what scenarios it would be best used. xiaocai Posted December 3, 2011 at 10:44 AM Report Share Posted December 3, 2011 at 10:44 AM If you read Chinese (I presume you do?), you can find a lot of examples searching the key word with Google or Baidu.
WestTexas Posted December 3, 2011 at 03:15 PM Report Share Posted December 3, 2011 at 03:15 PM I think it's mild compared to the really bad obscenities in Chinese
Syryanyang Posted December 7, 2011 at 12:23 AM Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 12:23 AM Depends on the occasion you use it. If you really mean someone should be dead, then it's rude. Otherwise (and most occasions) it's fine. BTW this word is pretty obsolete, no one uses that in real like.
muirm Posted December 7, 2011 at 03:33 AM Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 03:33 AM Is 该死 the official translation of "damned" for religious works like the Bible?
skylee Posted December 7, 2011 at 12:09 PM Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 12:09 PM murim, have you tried to find it out? You know, like search for the Chinese version of some examples with the word "damned" from the Bible?
roddy Posted December 7, 2011 at 01:25 PM Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 01:25 PM It's 有罪 in this bit of the Bible at least (not sure if clicking on the invitations to 杀鬼子 and play with 美女s result in damnation)
feng Posted December 7, 2011 at 01:41 PM Author Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 01:41 PM I don't think this word is actually in the english bible. As for the word 該死, it definitely doesn't occur in the standard chinese translations either. (I checked)
muirm Posted December 7, 2011 at 02:41 PM Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 02:41 PM Interesting. I was just curious if it had any religious undertones like the English word because that might affect its swear-score in certain situations. No, I did not try to find out before asking my question. Do I feel guilty now? A little bit.
jbradfor Posted December 7, 2011 at 08:41 PM Report Share Posted December 7, 2011 at 08:41 PM No evidence to back me up, but I think that the relationship between "damn" as an expletive and "damnation" with religious undertones is minimal at best in modern usage. aifeluna Posted December 16, 2011 at 11:56 AM Report Share Posted December 16, 2011 at 11:56 AM I'd say rude will more depend on tone more than words.
