study chinese with anki: an extension

hi!

i currently study chinese in taiwan and struggle with remembering characters. i use websites with character decomposition a lot, so i thought why not integrate the whole thing in anki? that's why i started to write a anki plugin which does a character decomposition to help me study. besides decomposition i also added some other features.

the featuers are (i use 風景 as an example)

- decomposition of each character

景: [jǐng,yǐng] scenery; bright; circumstance; conditions; luster of gem; view

* 京 [jīng,jǐng,qiáng,yuán] capital; Beijing; capital city

x 高 [gāo,gào] high; tall; ancient place name; elevated; higher; ...

x 日 [rì,mì] sun; Japan; day; date; day of the month; Japanese;...

- character matching: other vocabularies in my deck matching one or many of the characters

eg. 風 is included in 颱風,電風扇,風箏,...

- component matching 1: this character is a component in other vocabularies

eg. 景[p] (jing is part in) 電影院,影片,影印,

- component matching 2: one component of the character is a component in other vocabularies

eg. 景[京] (the part 京 jing is part) 亮,涼快,原諒,

- homophones: if there is another vocabulary with the same sound+tone

- referencing similar characters: if i confuse characters i can link them together.

confuse because: they look the same or the meaning is not clear to me

eg. i confuse their meaning a lot: 抓,摘,搶 or 到 首部 知道

eg. they look to similar for me. 东 and 车 (haha, simplified chinese)

i do the linking simply by writing "ref 抓,摘" in a note field of 搶

i generate all this output to the back side of every anki card which looks then like:

------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------

風: [fēng,fěng,fèng,fān] wind; custom; manner; news; style; air; atmosphere; manners

------------------------------------------------

景: [jǐng,yǐng] scenery; bright; circumstance; conditions; luster of gem; view

* 京 [jīng,jǐng,qiáng,yuán] capital; Beijing; capital city

x 高 [gāo,gào] high; tall; ancient place name; elevated; higher; ...

x 日 [rì,mì] sun; Japan; day; date; day of the month; Japanese;...

------------------------------------------------

the whole plugin is currently not an anki plugin, i programmed it in php as a standalone application.

the decomposition data is provided by my friend Ed from http://chinese-characters.org

and the final thoughts:

since i use my program i have found so many new links between characters.

who else is interested in this kind of program?

does anybody have any improvements or ideas?

i have no idea about programming in phython, maybe somebody can create a plugin for anki or help me?

I'm definitely interested. This would be extremely useful if it worked well with Anki, but not so useful online simply because there are already quite a number of similar websites around. I've been looking up character parts and connections between characters ever since I started learning Chinese. Having it integrated in Anki would be quite awesome, frankly speaking. I don't know any programming language, so this post is more to cheer you on that actually help. :)

hey snigel,

the program is already working and useful. and you are right, making "yet another" website makes no sense. in fact i integrated it into my anki deck, because i kept looking up characters on websites and copy pasting the data to my anki cards. and this is just too time consuming.

thanks for your cheering mate.

i'm studying now pavc3+4 (practical audio visual chinese) so i can send a demo deck to anybody interested.

This might be slightly off-topic, but if it's practically possible, we could combine my lists with the lists you have. I'm the guy hosting all the PAVC stuff in Anki and it would definitely make the decks better if we could include more about character parts. I'm not sure how to do this, though.

@oneeye: yeah ed is cool, he helped me out with the datasource :)

@snigel: ah, you created those pavc decks. i used your decks as a source for my additions.

oh, and you are also the hacking chinese guy. great blog!

i finished creating the sample deck. you can download it here:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/1qi3m9

what do you guys think?

one thing is, that all those additional "data" makes the deck a little big.

snigels original decks together are about 10mb, adding the generated stuff it becomes 40mb.

but it works still nice (no lag,...) on the computer and even on my phone.
