Help on Visas

Does anyone know how difficult it is to change a student visa to a work visa, i.e. I'm planning on studying for a while and then eventually trying to find a job. Would I have to exit China?

What about the F visas issued in Hong Kong? Am I likely to encounter problems if I try to have this changed to a Z visa at a later date?
