悶's different pronunciations

Can men1 and men4 be used interchangeably for 悶？

Not always, like 闷闷不乐 can only be pronounced as mèn mèn bú lè.

Thanks, is it possible to say that (adjective ) men1 and men4 can both mean suffocated or closed but only men4 is used for depressed or bored?

Which dictionary are you using, and have you found something to suggest it's wrong?

I'm using Pleco on my iPod. Basically it says men1 as adjective means 空氣不流通and men4 means 1.封閉的，不透氣的 2。煩

Those are different meanings, so they can't really be interchangeable. You could probably get away with it though, it's easy to imagine that being the kind of thing Chinese people mix up.

I got back home and checked some other dictionaries. I'm beginning to understand the difference:

為那事生了一肚子悶氣（men4）

門窗關得嚴嚴的，悶氣得很，快開一開吧！（men1）

Edit:

I think (adjective)men1 means to feel uncomfortable because of poor air circulation in the room and men4 means：

1. to feel uncomfortable or distressed 心里很闷

or

2.sealed 闷罐子

problem solved.

mēn doesn't have to be in a room - weather can be 闷热.

Ah, taking a closer look at the Guifan, it looks like there's an adjective / verb distinction for 闷 as in sealed / to seal.
