I am looking for some help translating the characters on two metal seals which I have inherited. I have been searching for someone who could help translate them, but thus far no one has been able to identify the characters. My guess is that they are writen with Seal Script. The stamps date from around 1780 to 1898.

Is there anyone who has an idea about these? If needed I can send you better quality images.

Thanks

Left- 知者樂; right - 仁者壽 (from the Analects - Yongye) - The wise are joyful; the virtuous are long-lived.

Thank you for your help. Is it common for a stamp to include a famous saying such as this? I was assuming that most stamps were of an individual's name. Is this common?

I don't really know how common these are/were as compared to stamps with names. But they are/were not uncommon. And Painters/ calligraphists tend to have many of such chops. And if you spend more time on this website, you will find virtual stamps saying 入鄉隨俗, etc.
