deathtrap Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:38 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:38 PM I can't fathom this being normal speed even after listening to some other videos in Chinese and watching some mandarin audio movies. What do you think? This is a video from the DVD of New Practical Chinese Reader. It just seems to be spoken at hyperspeed, they barely utter any syllables! <Hyperbole>I bet if you cut out the pauses it would be 1 second of dialogue and 2m35s of filler</Hyperbole> Quote
roddy Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:52 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:52 PM Ha ha ha ha ha ha Try this - podcaster I listened to a lot years back. Listened, and listened, and listened . . . (and if you think that's easy, you're still watching the advert) Quote
歐博思 Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:56 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:56 PM This isn't outside of the norm, especially amongst friends. Quote
roddy Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:58 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 07:58 PM Found one of the actual podcasts I remember listening to here (on student prostitutes). Glad to say it doesn't seem so fast now . . . Quote
deathtrap Posted December 15, 2011 at 09:19 PM Author Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 09:19 PM roddy, my ears, they broke Quote
Shelley Posted December 15, 2011 at 09:20 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 09:20 PM Seems reasonable speed to me. A bit slow in places:) Didn't know these exsited. Good find, will listen to more. Thanks. Quote
imron Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:11 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:11 PM Try this - podcaster I listened to a lot years back. Haha, that's great. I wish he was still making podcasts. Quote
roddy Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:13 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:13 PM And Antiwave. Ah, happy days. Quote
blaketx Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:15 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:15 PM Love his accent. Any recommendations for podcasts with a similar style? Quote
imron Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:26 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:26 PM And Antiwave. Ah, happy days. I still love this Antiwave podcast. Quote
roddy Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:37 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:37 PM That is the exact one I was thinking about. To be honest, anyone interested in this kind of stuff would probably be best advised to go back and listen to the stuff linked here. Both Antiwave and 胖大海 have enough of a back catalogue (oh, and Princess Remy, bless her) to keep anyone busy for months. There might be current versions, but I haven't seen any. To address the OP - that's well within normal range. Sorry. Quote
renzhe Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:59 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 10:59 PM I'd say that it's pretty average speed. My girlfriend says it's slower than average, but still within normal range. Fast Mandarin is faster. Quote
imron Posted December 15, 2011 at 11:11 PM Report Posted December 15, 2011 at 11:11 PM Both Antiwave and 胖大海 have enough of a back catalogue (oh, and Princess Remy, bless her) Just went looking to see if 胖大海's back catalogue could be downloaded as a single bundle from somewhere, but didn't have much luck. It would pain me to have to sit through them all in tudou. Quote
imron Posted December 16, 2011 at 02:20 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 02:20 AM P.S. from time to time you hear people mentioning how Standard Mandarin = Beijing accent. If however you compare the accent of the speakers from the link in first post, with an actual Beijing accent from the link Roddy provided, you'll see there's quite a difference. Quote
WestTexas Posted December 16, 2011 at 04:58 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 04:58 AM Honestly I didn't think Roddy's first link was that fast. It certainly wasn't slow, but not unnaturally fast and not like the person was going out of his way to talk that fast. Actually I was watching 非诚勿扰 a few days ago and they had a guy from south China who spoke much faster than that, and also didn't distinguish at all btwn s/sh and c/ch. I couldn't understand that guy at all. I can't check the OP's link cuz it's on youtube Quote
rezaf Posted December 16, 2011 at 05:41 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 05:41 AM After listening to 胖大海 I think I made the right decision to study Mandarin in Shanghai. The speed wasn't that difficult to follow but those ers were. Had to listen to some parts a few times to decode the ers. Quote
wushijiao Posted December 16, 2011 at 05:49 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 05:49 AM Found one of the actual podcasts I remember listening to I think I'm the one who originally found this podcast, if I'm not mistaken. Yes, it seems much easier to understand now...but then again, I work with some Beijingers who sounds exactly like this. Quote
jasoninchina Posted December 16, 2011 at 07:37 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 07:37 AM Thanks for sharing the link, I didn't realize NPCR was on youtube. I would say that the speed is a bit on the slow side. I do not often hear people speaking that slowly. Recently, I've been studying this dialog http://www.lingq.com/learn/zh/workdesk/item/2685734/reader/. Although I can read the transcript fairly well, the recording is a bit fast for me in some areas, so it's been great to study. I think this recording is pretty typical of conversation speed. Quote
imron Posted December 16, 2011 at 07:58 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 07:58 AM That link can only be accessed if you sign up to lingq. I find 锵锵三人行 pretty typical in terms of speaking speed. After watching a couple of the NPCR videos, I wonder if the producers realise how patronising come across. Quote
roddy Posted December 16, 2011 at 09:42 AM Report Posted December 16, 2011 at 09:42 AM Wushijiao, pretty sure it was you who turned up 胖大海。 Good work, now find a current equivalent 1 Quote
