azzurra87 Posted December 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM Report Posted December 27, 2011 at 10:34 AM Dear friends, I have one question about following question: 巡警偶然在半夜里撞见她在马路当中为死鬼烧纸钱 I know about chinese tradition about burning imitation paper money for the dead, but in this case I'm not sure about the translation of 死鬼: does it mean "burning money for the SPIRITS"? or "burning money for her HUSBAND" (since I found on a dictionary that 死鬼 can be referred also to a woman's husband) or just "burning money for the DEAD"? which one do you think is most appropriate? Thanks a lot for your help Azzurra Quote

Kenny同志 Posted December 28, 2011 at 01:59 AM Report Posted December 28, 2011 at 01:59 AM It is probably 死者 or simply 鬼. 死鬼 in the context is a dead ghost, which doesn't make sense. 1 Quote
skylee Posted December 28, 2011 at 02:49 AM Report Posted December 28, 2011 at 02:49 AM 死鬼 in the context is a dead ghost, which doesn't make sense. I think it is ok. It is listed in the Taiwan MOE Dictionary, explained as " 死去的人。晉書˙卷一二一˙李壽載記:「省詩知意。若今人所作,賢哲之話言也。古人所作,死鬼之常辭耳。」" Same definition in Xiandai Hanyu Cidian. 1 Quote
New Members Jerah85 Posted December 28, 2011 at 06:39 AM New Members Report Posted December 28, 2011 at 06:39 AM I think you should pay attention to the context. Chinese seldom use 死鬼 in a sentence to describe dead people. it is too oral. 1 Quote

I would need one more information, because on the same text I found following sentence (note I am translating from chinese into english) 前些日子,她和四爷就是在这骨灰坛边上的泥地上滚成一堆呢,他俩真是昏头了。 I really can't understand the meaning of this 滚成一堆. Did they roll into a ball shape a pile? I need somebody to help me understand what does this sentence mean in chinese to find the correct translation... thanks a lot for your help Quote
