It's obvious he could not read it (it is framed so that it hangs in the wrong direction!). I'm assuming this is a low-quality / mass produced / Chintatown sort of piece, but being a Chinese learner, I couldn't help being a bit curious of what characters these are (if any!). The last character which I typed 燐 looks more like 粦 with the heart-radical, but I can't input it. I'm pretty sure it's 比 and not 北 that you saw.
