xiaojiang216 Posted January 8, 2012 at 10:39 PM Report Posted January 8, 2012 at 10:39 PM I just visited 大山's recently updated website (dashan.com) and was confused by the banner at the top of the page: "国际悠人,中西文化湿者,外语学习砖家大山的网上家园--'大山是歪国人但不是歪人'" Are these just 错别字 or is there something punny going on here? Thanks! Quote
skylee Posted January 8, 2012 at 11:20 PM Report Posted January 8, 2012 at 11:20 PM It seems unlikely that they are mistakes. Quote
rezaf Posted January 9, 2012 at 01:14 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 01:14 AM I think it's a pointless joke. He had better correct it before people start saying that Dashan doesn't know Chinese characters. Quote
imron Posted January 9, 2012 at 02:02 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 02:02 AM I think the only people who do that will be ones who don't understand the joke. Quote
rezaf Posted January 9, 2012 at 02:40 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 02:40 AM I bet a lot of elementary level Chinese learners are in that category but anyway 砖 and 歪 kind of made me laugh. Quote
skylee Posted January 9, 2012 at 04:03 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 04:03 AM I wonder why other people can keep writing 童鞋 etc and Dashan should not have his share of the fun. (Not that I support writing words wrongly, but using 諧音 is part of the fun in Chinese. And you know that he has not just chosen the words randomly when you see 悠人 / 歪人.) Quote
imron Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:11 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:11 AM I bet a lot of elementary level Chinese learners are in that category If Dashan had to limit his site, which is aimed at native Chinese speakers, to only contain content that could be understood by elementary level Chinese learners then it wouldn't be a very interesting site. At the end of the day, he's a comedian (among other things). Comedy (or attempts at it) should not be unexpected on his site. Quote
rezaf Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:13 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:13 AM It's funny to call himself a con but the problem is most learners won't understand the joke, however if his audience is mostly Chinese people then I don't see a problem. Quote
imron Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:25 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:25 AM The very first sentence on the English version of his site: Dashan Online is primarily targeted at a Chinese-speaking audience. Quote
rezaf Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:59 AM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 06:59 AM ok 認錯, I thought it was targeted at Chinese learners Quote

xiaojiang216 Posted January 9, 2012 at 04:14 PM Author Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 04:14 PM 大山 recently posted this video about the character 侃. In the video, he says that he is "调侃自己" when he uses the slang term 砖家 to refer to himself. I understand that 悠人, 砖家, and 歪人 are being used in such a way, but I was kind of thrown off when I saw them written on a very official-looking banner on his website. I don't really get the 湿者 one, though. Quote
jbradfor Posted January 9, 2012 at 04:58 PM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 04:58 PM I don't really get the 湿者 one, though. I assumed it was a joke on 显著 Quote
rezaf Posted January 9, 2012 at 05:02 PM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 05:02 PM I also don't get 湿者 . Can someone explain more? Quote

roddy Posted January 9, 2012 at 05:23 PM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 05:23 PM "What's that Mr Taxi Driver? Have I heard of Dashan? Oh, his Chinese is really good, is it? Well let me tell you, Mr Canadian-Sinologue-Loving Taxi Driver, that I have here a print-out . . .let me just unfold this, it's gotten kinda ragged . . . that I think you might find quite illuminating. . . now if you'll just look at this, right above the big blockhead's grinning mugshot. . . sorry about the tears, I've been showing this around a lot, y'see . . you'll see right there conclusive evidence . . ." 2 Quote
imron Posted January 9, 2012 at 07:15 PM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 07:15 PM I know but what's funny about being wet? It sounds like ambassador. Also, I wonder if it means wet, or rather is related more to the 中医 concept of 湿 e.g. 内有湿者. Quote
imron Posted January 9, 2012 at 07:27 PM Report Posted January 9, 2012 at 07:27 PM 大山 recently posted this video OT: I see from his videos that he's not using Pinyinput yet Quote
