jbradfor Posted January 19, 2012 at 09:10 PM Report Posted January 19, 2012 at 09:10 PM It turns out, after all my whining, that I'm actually not going to be at home Sunday. Even worse, I'm not sure I'm even going to have internet access. So I might end up calling roddy and asking for a real-time narration. Sigh. So don't worry about me, but have fun at the ball everyone! Quote
imron Posted January 20, 2012 at 01:06 AM Report Posted January 20, 2012 at 01:06 AM Oh noes: 2012央视春节联欢晚会通过官方微博发布消息,称赵本山因连日带病坚持排练,身体极度疲惫,决定退出2012年春晚的舞台。 Quote
Guest realmayo Posted January 20, 2012 at 10:23 AM Report Posted January 20, 2012 at 10:23 AM If it's true blame Roddy: 赵本山 has clearly read this thread and can't take the pressure of a Chinese-Forums audience. Quote
feihong Posted January 20, 2012 at 05:41 PM Report Posted January 20, 2012 at 05:41 PM Now I don't even know if I want to watch this anymore. Quote

Meng Lelan Posted January 22, 2012 at 02:05 AM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 02:05 AM Didn't last year's show open with a replica of a high speed train pulling up to the stage? Quote
Guest realmayo Posted January 22, 2012 at 09:50 AM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 09:50 AM Yes I wonder what the pride-in-the-New-China's-progress thing will be this year. No trains, no reason for more astronauts. Aircraft carrier? Quote
kdavid Posted January 22, 2012 at 12:00 PM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 12:00 PM Watching here: http://chunwan.pptv.com/ Connection seems very good. Quote

No trains, no reason for more astronauts. Aircraft carrier? ...or bloggers? At any rate, I'm not watching, but let me know what the pride-in-the-New-China's-progress thing turns out to be. Quote
greenarcher Posted January 22, 2012 at 03:40 PM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 03:40 PM Why doesn't China have a nationwide countdown similar to the NYC Times Square countdown? Wouldn't it be nice if the show showcases the different celebrations across different cities (live news feed) in China? Or is this impossible because everyone is at home? Eating dumplings and watching this show. I also notice that the venue is quite small considering how high-profile this event is. Why don't they use the Bird's Nest or Wukesong Gym as a venue instead? A lot of aspects of life in China has been influenced by the west but this yearly gala is still very old school. Why is that? I'm ignorant when it comes to mainland celebrities, are those in the comedy skits popular people? Good thing there's a Wiki article on this show, makes me understand it more. Quote
Meng Lelan Posted January 22, 2012 at 07:09 PM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 07:09 PM Thought there would be live reports on the gala in here by now. Did everyone fall asleep already? Ah, never mind, Going now to teach class. Quote
David Wong Posted January 22, 2012 at 08:16 PM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 08:16 PM I saw a lady in the audience taking a nap. The highlight of the gala for me was the two grade school kids performing opera. Quote
edelweis Posted January 22, 2012 at 08:22 PM Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 08:22 PM The fight against ink blots was not bad. But I took a nap too so I missed a lot of things. Quote
roddy Posted January 22, 2012 at 10:13 PM Author Report Posted January 22, 2012 at 10:13 PM I, hilariously, messed up the time difference, and tuned in at one minute past midnight. Quote

abcdefg Posted January 23, 2012 at 12:23 AM Report Posted January 23, 2012 at 12:23 AM Wouldn't it be nice if the show showcases the different celebrations across different cities (live news feed) in China? These have been playing for the last day or two on other channels. Many this year have featured dragon dances. A couple cities (I think Jilin, Changchun was one) had jiaozi making competititons as well. Thought there would be live reports on the gala in here by now. Did everyone fall asleep already? It was alternately tacky and boring. I turned it off about 10 p.m. It was a huge disappointment this year. I've watched it annually for about 5 years and this was by far the worst, in my opinion. I also disliked that it was so heavy on lame comic skits and pseudo-comptetitive banter between the hosts. Of course, it's possible that all the great acts came after 10 p.m., but I kind of doubt it. I'm ignorant when it comes to mainland celebrities, are those in the comedy skits popular people? Many of them are, such as the two older guys dressed in dynasty costumes doing the skit with the director in which the one playing the emperor could not remember his lines. They are a regualr fixture on these New Year Gala shows. Sorry, but I cannot remember their names just now. Quote
Meng Lelan Posted January 23, 2012 at 01:34 AM Report Posted January 23, 2012 at 01:34 AM It was alternately tacky and boring. I'm so glad I didn't have my Chinese School students watch any of it in class today. We had a very nice lesson on New Years customs and greetings, without any mention of the Gala. Did Da Shan show up or did he get axed like everyone else? Quote
feihong Posted January 23, 2012 at 02:29 AM Report Posted January 23, 2012 at 02:29 AM I liked the peacock dance and the acrobat number with the ladders. I didn't bother watching the whole thing, though. The one 小品 I saw (the lunchbox deliveryman) wasn't that great. Quote
fanglu Posted January 23, 2012 at 03:39 AM Report Posted January 23, 2012 at 03:39 AM I was watching it with the staff in the hotel I was staying at. After about an hour most of them had wandered off or were engrossed in their laptops. After two hours I went to bed, knowing I could never get that time back. (null) Quote
Guest realmayo Posted January 23, 2012 at 08:10 AM Report Posted January 23, 2012 at 08:10 AM I, hilariously, messed up the time difference, and tuned in at one minute past midnight. Have to admit I worked out what time Chinese midnight is in the UK, went online at that time, and only then realised where I'd gone wrong... Quote
