rogster001 Posted January 17, 2012 at 11:58 AM Report Share Posted January 17, 2012 at 11:58 AM Hi all, I have spent a while trying to find infomation about these makers marks and cannot crack it in any of my usual sources, the characters seem rather stylised to me, especially on the bottom of the rice bowl. i am really eager to know what they might say, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks! There are two stamps, the first is from a 'vintage' rice bowl with a shallow dish as a cover. bowl backstamp The second is a decorative plate with chrysanthemums and swallows on it, they are both very pretty items. plate backstamp:
Iriya Posted January 17, 2012 at 12:14 PM Report Share Posted January 17, 2012 at 12:14 PM The first one is 南山. The second is just decorative markings.
rogster001 Posted January 17, 2012 at 12:35 PM Author Report Share Posted January 17, 2012 at 12:35 PM ok thanks for the help So the characters : 南山 means Nanshan? This referes to a location then, so you would think it is saying this is the factory location? And the second ones really dont mean anything? They are just ' invented ' ? Iriya Posted January 17, 2012 at 03:01 PM Report Share Posted January 17, 2012 at 03:01 PM 南山 (south mountain) is a very common place name. Yes, the second one is just random scribblings, they don't look like the Chinese characters at all.
skylee Posted January 18, 2012 at 01:54 PM Report Share Posted January 18, 2012 at 01:54 PM the second one is just random scribblings, they don't look like the Chinese characters at all. Somehow this reminded me of my previous post here.
shinewind Posted January 19, 2012 at 12:56 AM Report Share Posted January 19, 2012 at 12:56 AM The second one is hard to identify. Are you sure it is from China? It does not look like Chinese, not even an ancient style. But I think it's possible that it is a kind of language of a minority ethnic group in China. David Wong Posted January 19, 2012 at 04:25 AM Report Share Posted January 19, 2012 at 04:25 AM The second image looks like some stylized version of the letters F.T.R.U or V. Could that be an acronym for something?
rogster001 Posted January 19, 2012 at 08:58 AM Author Report Share Posted January 19, 2012 at 08:58 AM Thansk for the additional replies here guys, the thing with the second one that makes me think there is some 'real ' meaning to the letters in some script 'somewhere' is that the actual plate is of a very good quality, it is clearly quite modern but is beautifuly made with an intricate and quality design and finish it is possibly japanese i suppose or perhaps a south east asian style copy? the plate is sort of imari featuring swallows and chrysanthemums, peonies in a panelled orang blue red design etc.
