xuexiansheng Posted January 20, 2012 at 11:46 PM Report Posted January 20, 2012 at 11:46 PM I know it is tradition to have a big feast with family on New Years Eve. I've heard that there are certain dishes that must be present (like turkey on Thanksgiving in the States). One is fish, the other is 饺子. Other than those two, what dishes do people like to eat on 'the big night'? Any family favorites? Links to recipes would be appreciated! Quote
skylee Posted January 21, 2012 at 03:00 AM Report Posted January 21, 2012 at 03:00 AM You may wish to learn the terms 年夜飯 and 團年飯. Also, 餃子 is perhaps a must in the north or for people from the north but China is a big place and different places have their own traditions. For example, we don't eat jiaozi in HK, but chicken is a must AFAIK. Quote

abcdefg Posted January 23, 2012 at 12:52 AM Report Posted January 23, 2012 at 12:52 AM Saw a TV show on it (in Kunming) a day or two ago. And was surprised to learn that in some regions, 火锅 is part of the feast. Where ever you are, it seems one needs to have a whole lot of dishes, sufficient for left overs to be the main source of sustenance on the following day. Quote
