geraldc Posted January 16, 2005 at 07:00 PM Report Posted January 16, 2005 at 07:00 PM Has any westerner studying Chinese picked up any Chinese supersititions? e.g. not getting hair cuts or cleaning your house around Chinese New Year, avoiding number 4, not giving anyone a clock or sending someone a picture of a dead person etc etc. Being Chinese but having grown up in the west, I've managed to acquire both Chinese and Western superstitions, although with Chinese superstitions as there are so many of them, I only find out I've broken them when my parents point out I've done so. I once got a big telling off from my mum for sending a postcard of Elvis from Gracelands to a friend because it was sending someone a picture of dead person... BTW it's well after twelfth night and the monkey and his/her snowman/woman friend still haven't taken down their Christmas decorations! Quote
Cyberian Posted January 16, 2005 at 07:14 PM Report Posted January 16, 2005 at 07:14 PM No. not getting hair cuts or cleaning your house around Chinese New Year That sounds like a poor excuse for not getting a haircut or cleaning the house. "Honey, of course I want to get a haircut and look sexy for you, and clean the house and do my share of the housework! ...But it is Chinese New Year!" Also, I was told to get a haircut before Chinese New Year. avoiding number 4 This is a dumb superstition. People are avoiding the number 4 simply because it rhymes with 'dead' in Chinese. I will take an apartment with 444 anyday just in spite of this silly superstition. I will take it right away if there is a discount. I do not believe in superstitions. The aboves. Black cat, breaking the mirrior, walking under the stairs/ladder, Friday the 13th, etc., etc., etc. Quote
