What does 'hou saam' in the context above mean? Also what characters are they? Thanks and sorry for hijacking! It is "好心". Please do continue to use Chinese/Cantonese when you like. The video about discrimination in Hong Kong is interesting. I was aware of that even as a kid watching HK television in Guangzhou. I think it was and still is to some extent very true. However, I can sense that things have improved a great deal in the last decade or so, maybe because of improved civic education and the fact that HK is no longer at the top of the mountain, so people become humbler and more understanding. I do not know whether it refers to father's or mother's mother. I also do know whether it is colloquial for Hokkien and Teochew. It is not a colloquial term for Cantonese speaker and also Cantonese as far as I know don't use 嬤 in written form. 嬤 means mother in Mandarin.. 嫲 is probably the colloquial for one's father's mother in Cantonese. 婆婆.is colloquial for one's mother's mother in Cantonese.
