MinorFatality Posted February 27, 2012 at 12:40 PM Report Share Posted February 27, 2012 at 12:40 PM 你为什么做这儿掉眼泪,一句话也不说? I don't understand the " 一句话也不说 " part. Maybe its just a specific grammar pattern I'm unfamiliar with. My teacher had said it was something like "not saying anything" but I was wondering how that worked. I've also never seen the character 句 before and I'm not really sure what it means in this context. Dictionary seemed unhelpful. 我爸爸说他要留在美国, 再也不回来了。 我怎么也没想到他会永远也不回来了。 In this case, I do not really understand the use of 也. I know it to mean 'also' and to be used in several grammar patterns, but I don't understand it here. Please explain?
skylee Posted February 27, 2012 at 12:48 PM Report Share Posted February 27, 2012 at 12:48 PM The fifth character in the first sentence, is it a typo? PS - Re 一句话也不说, 话 is something spoken or written down. 一句 means a sentence. 也不 means not even. The whole thing means, speak not even one sentence, ie speak nothing = not saying anything. yialanliu Posted February 27, 2012 at 12:56 PM Report Share Posted February 27, 2012 at 12:56 PM 一句话也不说 = not saying a single sentence. Literal would be "one sentence, not saying 也 = used to show emphasis in those two sentences @Skylee, it's 坐 which means to sit

renzhe Posted February 27, 2012 at 01:29 PM Report Share Posted February 27, 2012 at 01:29 PM I agree with yialanliu and skylee. 句 does mean sentence, but you can also think of it as a measure word for 话 here. 一句话 is a very common phrase, and doesn't necessarily mean exactly one grammatically complete sentence, but any kind of short statement. 也 is often used as an intensifier in negations, and when it is used with question words, it means absolute negation. 什么 = what 什么也不... = nothing 怎么 = how 我怎么也没想到... = I didn't think (at all, not in any way) that ...
