In search of "Old" Beijing

I know 胡同s are a bit of a Beijing cliché. Even so, the "wonderfully dilapidated" ones close to the west gate of the temple of heaven feel like a more authentic slice of old Beijing than the ones in, say, 东城区.

In my search for the "real" Beijing, I once took random buses around the city and got off if I felt like wandering around the place.

There are some interesting-looking 1970s (I presume) buildings on the east side of the Temple of Heaven and a dusty old gate that must have once been an entrance to the park. I'll try the west side next time I go.
