"That sounds pretty unusual to me."

It may well be unusual for a Chinese girl to support their partner during re-training or further education. I have never lived for prolonged periods in China, so I really wasn't aware just how unusual it was. Reading Yialanliu's comments, and the case that I know about, both were committed to getting married in the future, so perhaps that is the key point. Quite rightly the thread was seperated, as it was getting quite divergent, but it is something that the original poster can keep in mind when considering his options.

Completely anecdotal, but my observation is that in Beijing and Shanghai foreigners tend to date relatively well-to-do Chinese. Perhaps it has something to do with which Chinese are most likely open to that type of relationship, share the same interests, etc. Some of these foreigners were supported during brief (several month) periods between jobs without it being any kind of issue (financial or relationship related). Again, just my observations; perhaps my friends are particularly lucky. Experiences would probably differ a lot by city.

A year and a bit later - how did things work out for our China-bound chemical engineer?

A year and a bit later - how did things work out for our China-bound chemical engineer?

Long story short, my now ex gf broke up with me. She had thyroid cancer (or the early stages of it) so her parents asked her to break up with me. They wanted her to stay in China, and were worried that she go back to the UK with me. She only told me the real reason a couple of months ago after she just had a partial thyroidectomy and well over a year after she ended it. She appears to be doing ok. Went back to work within a couple of weeks because she hated sitting around feeling useless.

I've since moved on (I feel like a bad person for saying it, especially with what has happened) and so I'm now not in a hurry to go back. I would still like to return or do some extended travelling for a while but I'm going to stick around in the UK for another year. Learning Mandarin has been put on the back burner; maybe I should get back on it.

Ah well, sorry things didn't work out and thanks for the follow-up.
