On a Mac, how do you input chinese special characters.

I cant work out how to type some of the rarer types of punctuation that I see others have typed into their documents, for example:

  • fixed width space (its like the spacebar, but the width of a chinese character, used for alignment)
  • hollow brackets, ie these [ ] but in outline form
  • single arrow, ie 《 but it has one line and is the width of a chinese character.

For reference for others, heres how to type some of the others

  • ⋯ shift 6
  • 「」 just type [ and ]
  • 『』 shift [ and shift ]
  • 、 backslash \
  • — shift 7 (its like "minus" but it looks better next to chinese characters)
  • 《 shift <

you didnt tell us which input method you are using and which OS. Different OSs (tiger vs lion) have different built-in methods, and there is a good deal of third party ones, imkqim, FIT, etc.

For those who don't know, "Mac" is short for "Apple Macintosh" computers, i.e. Macbook , etc... Not particularly fussed with version of which operating system needs to be used. More importantly is to be able to type.

I don't think you read yaokong's post clearly. He said which version of Apple's OSX are you using, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger etc. The Chinese input methods on the different versions can be different. You also don't mention which input method you are using on your Mac, the OS default (and if so simplfied or traditional), QIM, FIT, Sogou Pinyin etc. The way to input these characters will potentially be different for each of these, and what works for one may not work on the other.

Oh now I understand. I don't really care what IME or version of OS/X would be needed, I am more interested in being able to type than I am worried about OS features. (: I do think the IME's they have on Windows look ugly though.

Fair enough, but anyone trying to help you will care, because the way to type these characters will be different for each IME, and if you don't let them know which one you are using it will be difficult for anyone to give you a precise answer.

If you are using the default pinyin input comes with Snow Leopard, just press shift+alt+B and you will be able to choose all those punctuations you listed from the selection window.
